Cullman Beautified By New Lake At Lewis E. Smith Dam
Alabama Power Co. built the Lewis Smith Dam near Jasper on the Sipsey Fork creating a 21 000 acre lake with a 500 mile shoreline spanning Walker Winston and Cullman Counties. The $30 million project provides flood control industrial water and a growing recreation area with bass bream and crappie expected to thrive. The lake runs 41 miles through multiple creeks and will reach a maximum width of about one mile while water level sits near 2 feet below normal and rising.

Suit Filed For Injured Engineer In Macon County
A $200000 damage suit was filed in Circuit Court here against the Western Railway of Alabama by engineer John Mark Smith who was hurt when his Piedmont limited train plunged into a floodswept ravine in Macon County in January. His lawyers say the railroad neglected track and roadbed inspections. Smith, trapped with a broken leg for about four hours, was en route to New Orleans when the tracks failed. The article also notes a separate line about incunabula and cradle books printed before 1501 A D.
