Theodore Roosevelt declares to repudiate the Republican Convention and lead an independent campaign for Progressive principles. He urges friends to join the fight regardless of loyalty or follower count, while contingency plans swirl around Hadley and other potential nominees as Taft factions consider strategy.
Chicago reports indicate Hadley Stock emerging as a potential regular nominee as the Taft forces clash with Roosevelt factions at the National Convention. The roiling sessions center on contested delegates, with plans for a possible separate convention in Orchestra Hall debated and police prepared to intervene if needed.
The Court of Appeals orders six months on the county road for soft drink operators Ben Strain and Chas Woodward of Déestur, as Morgan County cases previously imposed six months road sentences plus fines. The matter may go to the state Supreme Court.
The Alabama Grand Lodge of the United Brothers of Friendship and the Sisters of the Mysterious Tens met in joint session at the City School Building on Wednesday morning June 19 with State Grand Master A Howze of Birmingham presiding. About four hundred delegates attended including prominent business and professional men. Committees on Rules Laws and Supervision Mileage Printing Grand Master’s Address and more were appointed. The State Grand Master reported the order meets state insurance requirements and holds a license as a fraternal organization until 1918. A banquet for visitors followed with a program and a historic sketch by Rev N R Fielding.
About 750 to 1,000 Morgan County property owners will be cited by Back Tax Commissioner B. P. Wallace to appear before the Commissioners Court on the second Monday in July to show cause why their property assessments should not be raised. The drive targets $200000 in increases. sales set for unpaid taxes occur next Monday with offerings to the highest bidder.
The Sam Winton habeas corpus contempt case resumes tomorrow morning before Circuit Court Judge D. W. Speake after a postponement. Attorney E. W. Jodbey’s final speech is expected to precede any decision and a ruling may come or be delayed pending further argument.
The Lang versus Louisville and Nashville damage case for 110000 was given to the jury shortly before noon and remained with the jury at 3 pm. The Kirby vs L and N suit for 10000 damages was continued to the next term at the plaintiffs' request.
June 20 report says Jim Bowman a white man known in town was knocked in the head by a black man near Georgia about a short distance from Hartselle. Bowman is reported fatally injured. attacker unknown to police and fled the scene.
N H Walker sustained a severe foot injury when an axe slipped while attached to a pole. The blade cut just above the ankle to the bone. Dr Gi esple dressed the wound and reported recovery possible, with Walker expected to be out of work.
County Commissioner John L. Foote reports Morgan County cotton acreage is small but crop prospects appear favorable with clean thrifty plants. He notes cotton is about 75 percent off this year and fertilizer demand will rise as the crop matures. Corn is expected to be short due to reduced planted area and ongoing field work. Bud worms have appeared in parts of the county, linked to cool nights.
A speaker reiterated backing for Roosevelt during a community event, confirming continued support for the president despite questions. The remarks underscored loyalty to Roosevelt within the local audience.
Washington June 20 Taft officials deny he will withdraw his name while Roosevelt is alive. A report that Senator Crane claimed authority to withdraw Taft’s name is refuted by Crane who says he did not make such a statement. The president promptly contacted Crane by long distance telephone to dispute the claim.
The Court of Appeals of Alabama reversed the State v Sheridan case, remanding for a new trial. Sheridan, convicted of grand larceny in Hartselle, allegedly stole a hack. A co-defendant Sam Bain testified he was with Sheridan. Bain was convicted. Sheridan was represented by C. H. Price.
The white man Lee Danby, accused of cutting J. Daniel during a daytime clash at Lowleville and Nashville shops, remains at large this morning. Chief Deputy Thompson said officers could not locate Danby at the shop or his home near Austinville where he is employed. The victim was seriously cut.
The sidewalk laying project is moving quickly and no notice is being lost in the work. It is expected that nearly all walks will be completed by October.
