Ground money sale eyed as old cash grinding grows
Washington reports federal banks grind worn currency rather than burn it to meet environmental rules. The Treasury plans to sell the ground cash, called lint-like money, with only one Kansas oilfield firm showing interest at about 10 dollars per ton for drilling mud. Potential roofing use studied, but few viable buyers exist. About 2,500 tons of currency, totaling 1 billion dollars, are destroyed annually.
