Unauthorized Attacks Said Much Larger
Washington sources said unauthorized air attacks on North Vietnam were more numerous than the 28 missions cited by Gen. John D. Ryan to a House subcommittee. The four month period from Nov 8, 1971 to March 8, 1972 involved 147 aircraft in attacks, with Pentagon insiders noting more than 28 of the missions were initiated by American planes. Only 123 attacks were officially recorded as protective reactions, and overall numbers remain uncertain amid limited investigations and no planned broader inquiry. See UNAUTHORIZED On Page A10.
