In Monroe Alabama Sheriff E E Nicholas says a 12 year old boy Billy Harrison is held in county jail after the accidental shooting of 13 year old Josephine Welch. Harrison says the other boy and he were playing with a 12 gauge shotgun when he fired the weapon out a window striking Josephine in the head.
President Truman accused the Soviet Union of obstruction and aggression endangering world peace in a major foreign policy speech at the University of California. He contrasted Russia with Americas record of action for peace and urged honest negotiations without great power deals while warning Greece and Korea as tests of Russia’s intentions. He also criticized Henry A. Wallace and signaled openness to UN principles and future talks.
President Truman vetoed the Bulwinkle bill that would let railroads and other carriers form rate agreements with ICC approval, opposing group rate control as a departure from regulated competition. Senator Reed may seek override as AAR decries the veto and defends carrier agreements.

The Franklin Power and Light Co in Franklin Tennessee reduced rates on June 1 as the 32nd private distributor to undercut the basic TVA rate. TVA noted high residential usage in 1947 averaging 3 350 KWH per customer and a cost of 1 45 cents per KWH versus 3 09 cents nationally, with about 5500 customers set to save roughly 14200 dollars annually.
E. J. Gilbert Jr was bound over to the grand jury after county officials arrested him on a false pretense charge. An affidavit by Jack D Sherman states Gilbert falsely claimed to Thomas L Townson that he had $310 on deposit at The First National Bank of Gadsden Alabama and used the misrepresentation to obtain $310.

Trustees backed by Brid gest approved continuing distress benefits, while operator trustee Van Horn vowed to contest in court delaying final moves. Contract talks resume Monday afternoon.
Montgomery June 12 The veteran training program has reached a new high in Alabama with 64 020 World War I veterans in training last month. Announcement by Smith notes 23 318 schools and 5 248 training under the rehabilitation plan for disabled veterans.
In Washington on June 13 the senate appropriations committee voted 12 to 8 to provide 3,000,000 for a Tennessee Valley Authority steam plant near Wattsburg dam.
