Mine Gasification Studied for Underground Power
The Bureau of Mines will study coal gasification at the Gorgas Alabama mine to see if underground burning to extract gas can beat conventional mining for power. Dr A C Fieldner announced after a conference with engineers oil experts and military reps that an economic analysis will follow the Alabama Power Co Gorgas test results.

Underground coal burning as heating gas tested at Gorgas
The Gorgas experiment, costing about 75000 dollars with two thirds funded by Alabama Power and one third by the Bureau of Mines, showed underground combustion and gas production could be maintained and controlled. Engineers Milton H. Fies James L. Elder and James J. Dowd led the four month test, quenching flames in April to study roof action and gas quality deemed not crucial. Col L C McCab notes similar Belgian experiments underway.
