Demobilized Red Army soldiers are left in the Soviet zone to work in German factories for expert training. Informants say they are placed in machine works and optical plants, mostly in areas where they were stationed as soldiers, under German technicians.
West Point Manufacturing Co purchases Columbus Manufacturing Co for about 7 million dollars in what is described as the largest textile deal in the South in recent years. Columbus president C Abbott Turner said 75 percent of his firm’s common stock had been delivered to West Point.
In Hartsboro Alabama a special Russell county grand jury session was ordered to probe a reported attempt by a Negro youth to rape a white woman and the mob’s plan to lynch him. Mayor Hart Vann helped rescue 16 year old Jimmy Harris and Harris was placed in Kilby prison for safekeeping.
Forecasters warned rains would hit flood areas in Missouri Illinois and Iowa as the Mississippi and Missouri rivers rose toward the St. Louis region. The Mississippi was expected to crest around 35 feet with the Missouri likely to join later. Over 24 000 people were displaced across the three states and Grand Tower Illinois saw a levee break flooding about 2600 acres.
Mayor H R Summer and city officials met with planning board members and a citizen committee to discuss a TVA study of Decatur finances. TVA reviewers Shaw and Durish and University of Alabama expert Dr Wilbern offered comments as Adams from the planning board noted that further meetings will set recommendations on capital investment and public improvements.

The Power Commission granted Southern Natural Gas an interim emergency certificate to boost pipeline capacity by 39 million cubic feet daily, raising total capacity to 255 million. The plan covers 1947 construction including 8,000 horsepower to four compressor stations, 12 miles of 20 and 22 inch loop line, gas coolers, headers, valves, and appurtenances, with no extension to new markets.

A sedan overturn and fire near Camp Edwards after a night in New Bedford killed one soldier and injured four others from the 82nd airborne division. The dead man’s name was withheld pending kin notification. among the injured was Pfc. Ralph L. Fleming of Cullman County Alabama, treated and returned to his unit.
Mobile Alabama June 12 Republican voting in democratic primaries has become a headache in Alabama, the senate democratic party chairman said. He suggests affidavits to promise support or to deny prior Democratic votes as remedies, with action possible when the executive committee meets next January to set 1948 primary qualifications.
The C-54 transport flew 2000 miles from Long Beach California to Wilmington Ohio with no crew touching the controls. The eight hour forty six minute flight used pre set instruments and followed a route via Denver and Cincinnati marking a milestone for automated piloting.

Aaron Maze, a Morgan County farmer, was taken to Bryce Hospital in Tuscaloosa after an armed standoff with sheriff's deputies and highway patrolmen. He was accompanied by a nephew and Deputy Sheriff Leon Posey. The incident began after Maze, renting Miss Cordie Self’s farm, caused a disturbance and resisted police with gunfire, prompting a long cease and tear gas attempt before he was located about 200 yards from Antioch church in the county’s eastern section.
