The plan would allocate 57 843 acres to yellow pine production and use remaining land for low intensity management. Critics like Cross warn it would scar the scenic beauty and wildlife of the area. Annual yields are 28.3 million board feet of saw timber and 36 600 cubic feet of roundwood with sale by competitive bid. About 30 miles of roads will be built or rebuilt to aid hunters and recreation. Clearcutting may reduce habitats for squirrels and cavity nesting birds but improve varied habitats for deer and turkey. Local officials oppose the plan, citing environmental and scenic concerns.
