The Decatur city council in regular session at city hall will hold a public hearing Monday afternoon at two o clock on paving proposals for Eighth Street South from Seventh Avenue to 19th Avenue. Regular business will also be considered.
Israeli command says forces trapped a sizable Egyptian spearhead driving along the Palestine coast near Tel Aviv and repelled a Jewish offensive near Jenin. Egyptian armor losses were claimed after a break out attempt. competing reports from Cairo and Jerusalem described sieges and counterattacks around Isdud Yibna and Jenin.
City Police Chief J B Whitmire says Fain Lay a negro man about 35, signed statements admitting attempted entry at Ed Brown 701 W Walnut and entry at 415 Grove Street. Lay left shoes and pocketbook at the scene. Harrie Freeman heard by the sleeping occupant. Lay to be sent to county jail with Kennedy and Terry assisting in the investigation.
Southern Bell Telephone company announced a new three year contract with the Communications Workers of America ending long negotiations. The agreement provides job security, improved Sunday and holiday pay, higher termination allowances, enhanced promotional increases, revived arbitration, and a wage schedule adjustment, with no overall pay raise.
Senator Vandenberg took command of the drive to boost foreign aid funds after House cuts. The wrap-up bill totals 5.98 billion for non Communist nations, with the Senate likely to restore some funds amid Democratic unity and Republican support.
A colony of bees blocked traffic in front of a seed store in downtown Birmingham. Apiarist W. W. Hosea relocated the queen bee to a new hive, after which the swarm clustered around her without anyone being stung. Hosea noted bees are gentle during swarm season in April through June.
Dr. Cary V. Stabler from Florence State Teachers college urged Decatur High graduates to apply their “superior talents” as 108 seniors received diplomas in Riverside auditorium. Principal W. T. Jordan concluded 22 years at the school with a farewell after 800 in attendance.
Portland reports two bodies recovered from the Vanport flood zone as Red Cross lists 52 missing persons, including 45 children, in the Columbia River valley disaster that destroyed the war-built city of 18,700 after the dike breach.
The Columbia River holds its crest after flooding Vanport, with 26 known deaths in the region over two weeks. Forecasters expect the crest to pass tomorrow and predict a gradual fall into midweek as tributaries rise and officials brace for possible dike failures.
Decatur mother learns from her daughter Mrs. Jack Thompson how the Vanport flood tore through Oregon. Thompson and husband saved a friend and another family after the levy broke. Their own home area was ruined and the children lost all belongings.
The United Mine Workers and soft coal operators prepared to renew contract talks on Monday over miners pension benefits. Latimer, former U S railroad retirement board chair, released a memorandum comparing a March 12 survey to a prior November 6 version, arguing pensions could be $100 monthly from age 65 and up to 98 percent larger than first estimated. Ezra Horn acknowledged the March 12 survey but offered no details. An injunction by Judge Goldsborough ordered bargaining with the Southern Coal Producers Association, shaping the forthcoming negotiations.
The CIO United Packinghouse Workers announced the end of the Wilson strike with workers returning to work under the existing contract. Wilson was among four major packers struck March 16. The War Assets Administration delivered the deed for Courtland Army Air Base to the Alabama Department of Aeronautics in Birmingham on Friday afternoon June 4. The transfer, valued at about 5 million dollars, covers 2236 acres with four concrete runways, 91 buildings, two permanent hangars, a machine shop, waterworks and sewerage systems. The department has held possession since July 10, 1947 under an interim permit.
President Truman unveiled a four point farm program urging Congress to act and defend gains since 1932. He pressed for permanent price supports soil conservation expansion adequate markets and federal aid on rural housing roads and electricity. The speech followed a West swing and included a call for action to balance farmer and consumer prices.
Colie Cooper 35 of Laurens died when the rear of his semitrailer came loose and struck him in the head. He worked for a Columbia Road Construction company and was part of a Laurens to Columbia convoy. Aubrey Cantrell 47 of Gaston died when his pickup was struck by a Southern Railway passenger train at a city grade crossing.
