Fitzgerald Ga June 4 Solicitor Harvey Jay said five men charged in the 1944 slaying of Johnny Frank Stringfellow have a postponed trial until the term beginning July 19 The original date next Monday would have burdened farmers in crop season The defendants include Dave Walden a Florida penitentiary convict Johnny McVeigh of Range Ga Godwin Davis O Revel and Joe Allred of Phoenix City Ala
A group of House Republicans joined Democrats in opposing cuts to the foreign aid bill. The House Appropriations Committee recommended cutting 533 million dollars from the measure, while Secretary of State Marshall warned the cut would reduce European recovery to mere relief. The dispute delayed debate on the Agriculture Department supply bill, which the House eventually sent to a joint conference committee by a 204 to 140 vote. The Senate had boosted soil conservation, rural electrification, and school lunches funding, and Rankin criticized the European program saying it costs too much. Meanwhile, two Senate subcommittees closed four days of hearings on the Voice of America.
President Truman invokes the Taft Hartley emergency provision to curb a looming maritime labor dispute. The Hague reports Queen Wilhelmina will abdicate on September 4. Crown Princess Juliana, 39, will ascend the throne and be sworn in two days later. September 6 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Wilhelmina’s accession as princess regent commands end for her mother due to health.
A 21 month contract averted a threatened strike by 25,000 long lines telephone workers in 42 states. Negotiators signed the pact in New York under federal mediation, with ratification by union members still needed. Wages may be reopened once during the period and overtime pay for holiday work plus plant job compensation were settled. The Bell System has similar deals with 13 unions totaling 54,000 employees, three year terms with two reopenings.
The town of Daphne, Baldwin County, gains a quorum as Gov. James E. Folsom names three new council members Lawrence W. Foster Carl L. Stephens and Clarence V. Dryer The move ends a financial crisis caused by insufficient members to approve payments and near foreclosure threats.

Clifton Denney, 37, of Arab, reported in critical condition at Arab hospital after being shot by his brother Verbon Denney, 27, following a dispute over a mule on Verbon’s property. Verbon faces assault with intent to murder. their father John Denney, 78, held on conspiracy to commit a felony after allegedly throwing a hammer.

Unbridled waters broke through dikes from British Columbia to Oregon as Fraser and Columbia rivers surged. Canada reports 360 evacuees reached safety at Barnston and Hatzie islands. The flood threatens a 1 200 mile front with losses estimated at 110 million dollars for the Columbia basin and 30 million for the Fraser. President Truman seeks 75 million for public works and 600 thousand for relief as Vanport remains destroyed and missing residents linger in wreckage.

Morgan county chapter ships 243 wool skirts 24 gingham dresses and 240 yards gingham material to Red Cross warehouse Washington DC for civilian relief in Europe. Ninety five percent of skirts and dresses were made by home demonstration club members. Government supplied the material for volunteer clothing effort.
A blaze at Bethel Road Bethel dairy in Hartselle morning damages about one third of a two year old block building and equipment valued around $3000. The fire was found about 9 AM with no cows inside. officials suspect wiring fault.

An 11 year old boy on a bicycle was struck and killed in Birmingham. The victim was identified as Freddy Melton of Harvey Melton. The crash occurred in the suburb of Lewisburg on June 4.
Federal Judge T Alan Borough orders John L. Lewis to bargain with the Southern Coal Producers Association or face further contempt fines. Lewis and UMW counsel say they will seek a meeting at 2 P M Saturday or 11 A M Monday to begin contract talks as soft coal talks loom toward June 30 contract expiry.
