Senator O Ma Honey says the court decree forcing Du Pont to divest from General Motors will spur antitrust legislation in Congress. He urges reviving his 1956 idea to dismember GM, noting the Supreme Court decision could reshape antitrust law and industry dynamics.
A meeting of key cotton industry leaders from several North Alabama counties is set for June 7 at Belle Mina Substation. The session starts at 10 30 a m in the sub station auditorium. Walter L Randolph Alabama Farm Bureau President sponsors the event. He says Alabama faces threats from synthetics and foreign cotton and calls for mobilizing best thinking to chart the industry’s future. National Cotton Council members will be invited to review problems and the comprehensive program for cotton.
George Roberts Limestone County superintendent of education was chosen county chairman of Limestone County Chapter of the American Red Cross in yesterday session. He will replace James Newby at the end of the fiscal year July 1. Pauline Gossett was re elected part time secretary and commended for efficient chapter work. Discussion included forming a Limestone Blood Bank but no action was taken.
Washington report says Southern House members plan four days of general debate on the civil rights bill with amendments and quorum fights to slow passage. Rep Colmer leads the strategy to delay action until next week, aiming to blunt quick Senate movement and keep a jury trial clause in contempt cases.
The American Cancer Society reports men ages 50 to 70 who smoke are ten times more likely to die of lung cancer and 70 percent more likely to die of heart disease. The four year study of 188000 men found 11870 deaths and notes quitting lowers risk.
A car versus Trailways bus crash on U.S. 431 in Huntsville left Robert Wilton Pruitt Jr. dead at 16 and driver William Shelby Berry, 16, in critical condition. Bus passengers were uninjured. bus driver Oscar O. Overton was not harmed. The car struck the bus as it moved west toward Huntsville from Atlanta.
In a special meeting the Athens city council approved a loan contract and $950,000 in REA bonds for the Athens electric department. The 2 percent series bonds will be repaid over 35 years for additions and improvements along lines served by the department. The council also authorized borrowing up to $5 million in future years if needed.
Dr Sam Wiggins told Decatur High School 1957 graduates the South is the future place for service and urged looking back to the past while facing the future. Noel Harris received a 50 bond as outstanding senior and Lizabeth Ann Norris earned a 300 scholarship from the Decatur Rotary Club.
The 15 year old bride of Klan leader Alvin Horn remains in juvenile custody as officials review her future. An annulment petition claims a license listed her age as 20 and places the May 3 marriage in Trenton Georgia. Horn failed to post a 300 dollar bond. she was arrested in Tuscaloosa on a vagrancy warrant and later placed with her parents.
Morgan County board of equalization opened a series of hearings for property owners to challenge ad valorem assessments. Only written protests are heard, with hearings running through next Tuesday as chairman J. E. Young notes few protests this year.
