The Chamber of Commerce auto safety check lane logged 2,296 vehicles over nine days, averaging 255 daily or 42 per hour. Defects hit 39 percent of cars and 45 percent of trucks, with failures listed against 10-point criteria including lighting and exhaust.
The Rev E L McFee preached at the Decatur High School baccalaureate reminding seniors that life’s greatest adventure is becoming aware. He urged students to be alone and honest, answering What are you Who are you and Where are you, to avoid wasting life.
Four people were injured in weekend traffic incidents in Cullman County. A 1952 Studebaker driven by W A Baty overturned on County road 27 near Hanceville injuring Baty. a 1951 Oldsmobile driven by K H Horton overturned near Walker's Corner injuring Horton and a passenger. a 1 ½ ton truck driven by J D Harrison overturned on a downhill turn near Proper Hill after brake failure, killing over 200 chickens. Patrolman Fred Nothdurst investigated all incidents.
Mr and Mrs Edwin C Price of Decatur represented Alabama in the National All American Family Contest in Miami Beach and were named honorable mention winners in the final eliminations. The five Price children also participated as Idaho won the contest. Winners were chosen from questionnaires and discussions at Miami Beach based on family ties maturity under stress and talent development. The event is sponsored by the Book of Knowledge and the Boys Club of America.
President Eisenhower asks Congress for a supplemental $149.5 million to the Post Office Department to prevent substantial mail service cuts starting July 1. The request comes atop a $3.192 billion current appropriation, reflecting higher workload than expected and continuing post office funding debates.
The Associated Press reports 16 people died in Alabama over the weekend starting Friday at 6 p.m. and 22 during the longer Memorial Day period. Five drownings and nine traffic deaths in a single car crash are noted. no victims were from the Decatur district.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a jury trial amendment 7 to 3 as part of the civil rights bill provoking opposition from Republicans. A five story hotel named Pleasant caught fire early today in Worcester Massachusetts killing three people identified as Sadie Mason 58 Anna O'Brien and Mary Walton. Hospital officials said five of the eight injured were in very critical condition.
Air Force test pilot Capt. J W Kittinger Jr rode in a metal capsule attached to a giant balloon to an altitude of 96 000 feet 18 miles near St Paul Minnesota. He doubled the previous record and called the ascent inspiring and the proudest of his life.
Late bulletins report a crossing of a union picket line outside a construction site in Gunterville Alabama where two men were killed and six wounded. Gulf States Coast Co officials passed the pickets of United Mine Workers Dist. 50 with no incidents. The batch includes other federal notices from Washington and Talladega.
Joe M. McCullers, Decatur Chamber of Commerce manager, was elected vice president of the Chamber of Commerce Executives Assn of Alabama at a three day Tuscaloosa meeting. He previously served as treasurer of the association.
About two thousand American scientists signed an appeal urging an international agreement to halt nuclear bomb testing. Linus Pauling led the effort, warning fallout could cause 200 000 defective children in each of the next 20 generations. The signers include Nobel laureates H J Muller and Joseph Erlanger, and the statement says no organization shaped the appeal.
Ten nations urged postponing the United Nations charter review conference for at least two more years. The sponsors Brazil Canada Egypt El Salvador India Indonesia Ireland Iran Liberia and Panama asked the General Assembly's 81 nation committee to continue its work and report back at the 14th session in 1959.
