Police probe baffling death after a blonde woman's body is discovered in an oil barrel in a Philadelphia ravine. The barrel contains saw dust padding, a towel from Atlantic City, a raincoat and clothing. investigators estimate death occurred 10 to 21 days earlier.
Washington reports say the 4 billion dollar income tax cut cleared the Senate and heads to the White House amid uncertainty over President Truman’s veto. Taft argued the president should not veto as it would support high taxes and spending, while Congress plots final action before possible presidential decision.

The Morgan County Artificial Breeding Association reports progress in an artificial breeding program for dairy cattle. Breeding can begin once field equipment arrives, with James Orr and Sim Howell Jr. trained to perform breeding. The office will be in the County Agent’s building in Hartselle.
Dr. Charles C. Tansill, Georgetown historian, told Confederate groups Lincoln tricked the South into war and bombarded Fort Sumter to appear the aggressor. He spoke at a wreath ceremony for Jefferson Davis in the Capitol, arguing Lincoln bore sole responsibility. Confederate veteran leaders criticized the remarks as too harsh.
Mrs Frances Bell Wade wife of Duke University football coach Wallace Wade died at her Durham home. A Pittsburgh native she and Wade were married in a prior year and were longtime residents connected with the Duke program.
A Decatur battalion of the National Guard under quarters company and company A is reported to be in position tonight. A regular Army sergeant stationed at Decatur accompanies the unit.

Decatur City Council passed a parking ordinance creating one and two hour zones. One hour limits apply on and streets from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all days except Sunday. Decatur City Council rejected a nine member delegation's request to stop dumping near Austinville crossing. The group cited odor and pests from garbage from a packing plant and a chicken processing plant. Miss Lurline Lee Barnickle, 20, of Lawrenceburg Tennessee, was questioned by FBI agents at Pulaski as her critical condition improved slightly and authorities pursued suspects. The assault occurred Saturday near Veto Alabama with two white men identified by the victim. Police in Limestone and Lauderdale counties intensified the search for the pair who may be locals or former residents of North Alabama.
Southern soft coal operators and John L. Lewis United Mine Workers held a two hour session on a new contract in Washington and recessed until tomorrow. Conference chairman Tierney announced a news conference at 3 30 p m EST. Lewis was not in personal talks with the Southerners, but the union seeks the same wage concessions Lewis demanded from Western and Northern operators.
Florence youth Bill Petree was chosen governor at Boys State headquarters in Tuscaloosa Alabama Petree and his delegation of 197 will travel to the University for further instruction in government affairs tomorrow The event is sponsored by the American Legion.
Robert A. McMasters was elected president of the Decatur Lions Club to take office July 1, succeeding Thomas D. Edgil. He has been a Lions member since 1941 and is in charge of production at Southeastern Metals. The noon Greystone meeting also named officers and directors, with Ben L. Britnell presiding.
