Partly cloudy weather outlook spans today through Wednesday with scattered thundershowers in parts. Local residents and families travel to Washington Philadelphia Detroit Mayo Clinic and Maine for conventions vacations and medical checkups.
Frank Hague urged President Truman to request a draft of Gen. Eisenhower for the Democratic nomination. New Jersey supporters warned the state would bolt to the Republicans by over 300,000 votes if Truman runs. Hague noted surrounding states would also lean Republican, while Eisenhower said he could not accept any nomination.
Passengers on the Southbound Hummingbird witnessed a gag welcome home for Charles Howell as he returned from Nashville. A committee of Ralph St. John, Ralph Halbrooks, Coy Halbrooks, Charles Jones and Joe Teague arranged a bugler, a place card reading welcome home our hero, flashbulb photos and a brief group lift to the platform amid cheers.
Rep Miller of Connecticut argues Ike cannot run but predicts GOP and Democratic choices at 1948 conventions. Miller sees Democrats favoring Truman, Douglas, and Eisenhower in that order as the 1948 race unfolds. Illinois Democrats, led by Stelle, expect the Illinois delegation to back Truman.
The Alabama Motorists Association reports the national AAA Touring Bureau says travel to the Pacific Northwest remains unimpeded by recent floods. Motroists should check detours on US routes and confirm road conditions with local AAA before non US route travel.
Georgia Democratic Chairman James S. Peters said the state will vote for Eisenhower if his name is to be placed before the Democratic national convention. If no other state does so, Georgia will nominate Senator Russell as the preferred son. Virginia will cast its 26 votes for Eisenhower per Friday’s state convention instructions.
Judge James H. Crow opened the Morgan County circuit court civil session with prayer by Rev. Carl Roberts. The grand jury was charged as five civil cases were set for hearing including Hubert Mitchell v Hudson Motor Car, Ed Fowler v McCutcheon, Cliff Strickland v H Compton, Morgan County Alabama v Evelyn Lipscout, and Morgan County v Walton Bartée.
Cecil McMillan brought two plaster casts of a large cat footprint to The Daily office. He found tracks on his Russell Mill farm near Moulton Road and, with photographer Sam Hobbs, made casts showing a right front print about four inches wide with four claws. The casts are at Caddell's drug store for viewing.
Funeral services for Louis Ed ward Justice aged 48, a former Decatur resident, will be Thursday at 1 PM at his Detroit Michigan home. He died Monday at 8 AM from a heart attack in Roseville Detroit. He leaves his widow three daughters his mother Mrs M B Reynolds of Toney and brother C Frank Justice of Decatur and sister Mrs Mayme Hunter of Decatur. He was a former Methodist member in Austinville.
President Truman on the move toward Washington after Eisenhower said he could not accept the Democratic nomination. He gave reporters a brisk walk in Cincinnati and studied the Cincinnati Enquirer while aboard the Truman special train. Critics in the party push the draft issue as Roosevelt and Sparkman weigh in on the late night statement from St Louis.

A overheated oven sparked a small fire at West's Barbecue on Alabama Street Monday morning burning several shoulders of meat. Firefighters extinguished the flames with no major damage or injuries reported. Later in the day an auto fire in the 1200 block on Eighth Street S around 6 30 pm caused no further loss.
Tallahassee July 6 Gov Millard Caldwell said he cannot accept Ike’s statement as a refusal of the people’s will and remains for Eisenhower as the Democratic nomination. Caldwell will attend the convention as an elected Florida delegate and called Ike’s remark disappointing.
The Associated Press reports 555 total deaths over the three-day Fourth of July holiday, with 297 traffic fatalities and 187 drownings. Pennsylvania records 44 deaths, while New Hampshire and South Dakota report none. Only 2 of 48 states avoid violent deaths.
An accident on Highway 72 five miles West of Athens raised the Fourth of July weekend toll to eight in the Decatur Highway-Patrol district. James Lee Harris from Muncie Indiana drove off the road into a pole, injuring Susie Jones and Shellie Hammond both 69, and Alma Harris and Mattie Battles who were treated and released.
Ina Ryckley 23 and her baby left Dallas to campaign for clemency for Timothy Heard Ryckley, a Georgia life term prisoner accused in a poolroom double stabbing. Ryckley, recaptured in Dallas, faces a second murder indictment. his wife aims to raise funds for legal aid and a new trial.
Goodyear Decatur Mills had two grievances ruled against by impartial umpire Whitley P. McCay. United Textile Workers AFL Local One filed the cases, one over twisting department duties and the other over seniority of William Goode, a twisting department beam man. Arbitrator McCoy dismissed both cases.
About 50,000 of 400,000 bituminous miners refused to work, with four-fifths in steel company captive pits. Steel production halted as about 40,000 diggers in West Virginia Pennsylvania Alabama Kentucky and Utah followed the United Mine Workers policy of no contract no work.
About 6,300 of Alabama's 20,000 coal miners were idle in a dispute affecting the Tennessee Coal Iron and Railroad, Republic Steel, and Sloss Sheffield mines. Two Sloss mines were idle but expected to resume. Woodward Iron and other commercial mines operated normally. Fuel reserves for steel mills were low, risking reduced production if stoppages continue.

Remaining idle were commercial coal diggers mainly in Western Pennsylvania where many captives are located. Mines owned by U S Steel Republic Steel Bethlehem Steel Weirton Steel Wheeling Steel and Jones Laughlin Steel were among those affected by the captive work stoppage. A Western Pennsylvania Coal Operators Association spokesman refused to say if the shutdown was a sympathy walkout. He said the captive mines are here and the commercials go, with clearer signs after the second shift.
