Tonight and Tuesday scattered thundershowers north with southeast winds on the coast. Temperatures reach 94 in the day and 74 at night. Local residents travel, court notices list arrests, and community updates include trips to Smoky Mountains and Washington.
Sylacauga Alabama July 5 A taxicab driver J W Pike 60 known as Uncle Bud was found dead in his cab with his money belt emptied robbery suspected Sheriff Earl Howell said a Negro woman found him and called authorities Pike had taken a call last night and did not return Coines fell from the belt and Coroner J M Hughes called the state toxicologist to assist in the case He is survived by his wife and a daughter.
The weekend death toll reached 395 with travel homeward from lakes and resorts peaking today. Traffic deaths totaled 206, drownings 106, miscellaneous accidents 41, and two fireworks deaths were reported. State tallies include Alabama Florida Georgia South Carolina and Tennessee with varying counts.
Americans marked Independence Day with sun and travel as heavy crowds flocked to beaches lakes and countryside. President Truman attended a Bolivar statue ceremony in Bolivar Missouri while travel deaths neared 335 for the long Fourth of July weekend.
On the Gray highway eight miles from Macon a car crash left J. W. Lewis of Macon dead and passenger Joe B. Mims gravely injured. The incident occurred on a curve and was investigated by Sheriff Holmes Hawkins of Jones county.
Agner B. Hansen 52, president general manager and director of Northern Paper Mills, died last night after a long illness. Born in Racine he headed the company for 12 years. Northern formed 1901 makes toilet tissue towels and napkins with 125 tons daily output. plant 119 tons. 1946 net sales were 10 million. Survived by wife who died a year ago and two children James and Barbara. Funeral arrangements not yet completed.
American Legion Commander James F. O Neil denounced Congress for not passing universal military training and urged a special session to push UMIT and veterans housing. He criticized leaders for valuing political security over national security and credited Legion members for advancing Mundt Nixon bill efforts.
Washington officials study three legal avenues to halt a looming steel industry strike over union shop terms led by John L Lewis. Options include a National Labor Relations Board complaint, White House seizure of captive mines, or Taft Hartley national emergency procedures, with Denham expected to pursue a strike-ending court order.

Three cars were damaged Sunday in the only accident reported by city police over the Fourth of July weekend. Ernest Ellenburg of Spartanburg South Carolina drove south on 16th Avenue and struck H T Simmons who came west on Seventh Street. Simmons spun and hit Jimmie Winning who was stopped on the west side of 16th Avenue. Officers Hunter and Jones investigated.
Three Oxford, Alabama youths, Don Jerry Adams 13 Jo Ann Adams 15 and Bida Boyd 18, drowned in a creek 11 miles southwest of Talladega while attempting to rescue each other. The youngest stumbled into deep water as his sister Jo Ann tried to help, then their cousin Ida also attempted to save them.
Reported plan to protest Allied use of fuel air planes feeding Germans, with tensions over Berlin air corridors and occupation policies. Movements include Yugoslav and Arab tensions, Bernadotte peace talks, and escalating regional violence.
NEW YORK July 5 A dollar a day wage boost and doubling of employees contributions to the United Mine Workers health welfare fund are in a new agreement with hard coal operators employing 80 000 men. The union scale committee ratified it after negotiations started Saturday night. The UMW welfare fund gets 20 cents per ton royalty, enabling a pension plan. Signs point to a soft coal strike in mines owned by steel companies.
City crews on Bank Street install parking meter posts under engineer B K Mixon of Duncan Meter company. Equipment arrived. full installation due this week. Mayor H R Summer said meters will go on posts only the day before operation with no start date yet. Decatur becomes first Alabama city to install meters after a recent court ruling. A total of 420 meters will be installed.
Sir Stafford Cripps told Parliament the sterling area and reserves have dwindled to 473 million pounds and dollars 1.892 billion. Last six months saw 254 million spent, with 22 million regained from Marshall Plan aid as two day Commons debate opens. Conservatives stay silent on the accord.
Mrs. Andree Francois 45 of Washington wife of a United Nations FAO attache died at Beebe hospital from burns in a gas heater blast at a weekend cottage in Rehoboth beach during the July 4 holiday. She suffered third degree burns and was shipped to Atkins funeral home in Lewington for burial.
Hindu Muslim rioting in Bombay began last night and had claimed 35 lives by late today with at least 95 injured. The majority of victims were Hindus.
Mrs. Samuel McKnight Green 86 former national DAR officer and past Missouri state regent died yesterday in Arkadelphia. A former St. Louis resident she moved here eight years ago after her husband’s death. Green headed Missouri school for the blind for 44 years and is being returned to St. Louis for funeral services tomorrow.

Ohio highway patrol says missing liquor cargo from Joseph E Seagram and Sons was halted in Bedford Pennsylvania en route to Washington. Driver M L Warner of Springfield Ohio detained for questioning after breakdown prevented notification to Inter State Motor Freight. cargo stored awaiting further action.
Two holiday violent deaths were reported in Tuscaloosa on July 5, a shooting and a freight train fatality. Percy W. Cooley, 38, a Cedar Cove employee, died from bullet wounds after a confrontation with his son in law Edward Daniel Thompson, who claims self defense. Homer H. Elmore, a painter from Alberta City, was crushed while asleep on railroad tracks near the AGS station. Cooley’s widow and seven children survive.
A big cat sighting in West Austinville led residents to plan another hunt after A R West and his wife heard a loud roar Sunday night. The animal was seen near Jones grocery about a week earlier as efforts to contact hunter T J Hudson continued.
Four people were seriously burned in an explosion at a mink ranch in Sheboygan County. Wilfred Kalmerton 53 suffered critical burns covering about three quarters of his body. Ralph Hobbs 23 and his wife Clara 21 plus Louis Gartman 22 faced severe burns and shock. The blast damaged a corner of a three story building used for meat prep and storage for 3 000 minks. vapor from a leaking refrigerator unit reportedly ignited.

The North Carolina Veterans For Eisenhower committee sent a telegram to General Eisenhower stating that any citizen he endorses universal military training and a youth draft can not refuse an honest draft for public office in perilous times. Committee Chairman Thomas H. Broughton of Lenoir said the telegram stressed his essential services as President for national welfare and world peace.
Hague and party leaders urge world leadership through Eisenhower as Truman and Nixon lack decisive appeal. Delegates back a draft Eisenhower resolution and pledge New Jersey delegates, signaling growing support ahead of Philadelphia convention. 18 men from 17 states to gather and vote, with 568 of 1,234 nominating votes cast at the start.
A continuation of hot humid weather described as ideal for the corn crop was forecast for the nation. Temperatures were expected to run 90 to 100 degrees from the plains to the Atlantic coast and north to New England except Maine. The hottest areas were the Carolinas Georgia and the far Southwest including Arizona.
