A weather outlook notes increasing cloudiness with warmer temperatures in the southern portion Sunday. Monday brings cloudy skies with occasional rain in the south and rain and snow in the north, with moderate easterly winds along the coast.

A default judgment for R. W. Puckett of Hartselle was entered by Judge Newton B. Powell in a sales tax dispute. The ruling bars sheriff from collecting $981.36 but does not affect the state Department of Revenue’s authority or assessment.

Mrs McConnell Injured in Fall in Athens Home

Mrs. A M McConnell of Athens slipped on snow at her front entry Saturday morning and suffered a broken arm. She is the wife of Judge A M McConnell who served 18 years as Limestone County probate judge.

Blizzard Here Fails To Dim Gala Club Opening Date

Blizzard outside does not delay the Decatur Country club opening Friday evening as 250 members tour the new building. The spacious ballroom features pink carnations and fern, dining room with 100 seating, and a buffet of ham sandwiches and more. A member jokingly notes dessert absence while another jokes about waistlines.

Mrs Sherrow Injured After Icy Road Crash Near Cherokee

Mrs Jack Sherrow of 518 Gordon Drive is in Colbert County Hospital Colbert County Alabama after an accident west of Cherokee Saturday afternoon. She suffers five broken ribs a broken collarbone and a forehead cut. The Sherrows were returning to Decatur from Springfield when the car skidded on an icy hill struck a roadside railing. Mrs Sherrow was thrown from the car as the door opened. Mr Sherrow was unharmed.

Less Diphtheria Now Says Health Report

A Morgan County health report for 1947 shows the county has less diphtheria than ever before due to preventive medicine. The document notes vaccinations and public health work, urging continued shots for babies and children to prevent future outbreaks.

Two Women Hurt In Decatur Crash On Ice

At about 7 15 p m at the Moulton highway and Caddo Road intersection two young Decatur women Joy Narmore 19 and Wanda Hampton 2 were injured with non life threatening cuts and bruises. Narmore is at Decatur General hospital while Hampton is at Baugh and ey clinic. A 1940 Buick driven by Billy Compton 19 and a 1939 Nash driven by George French 21 collided after Compton began turning onto Caddo Road Ice caused the car to skid and the Nash to strike the Buick. Minor injuries were treated at the scene. Damages were listed as total for the Nash and at least 400 for the Buick.

Decatur Struggles as 5.5 Inches Snow Blanket Falls

Decatur dug out from a 5.5 inch snow cover causing traffic delays and school disruptions. Temperatures ranged from 14 to 26 degrees Friday night into Saturday as outages and travel cancellations affected the region. Capitol bus schedules between Chattanooga and Florence were canceled with Sunday status uncertain.

Decatur Transit Says Cabs and Buses Operate

A spokesman stated cabs and bus service were still running at 7 45 p m and no interruption was expected. Officials had been asked after rumors arose that street conditions might halt service.

Severe winter delays hit Southeastern buses and trains

North to south bus routes between Nashville and Birmingham were about one hour late while the Red Bay line from Decatur to Red Bay remained on schedule. Trains ran but up to two hours late. Traffic lights failed on icy roads, prompting stay efforts on icy spots, bridges and hills. Decatur Transit had no trucks on highways. snow plows and road crews cleared streets and sidewalks. Early morning traffic lights were out as officials trusted drivers to take extra care.

Breakfast in Hollywood program to aid Decatur band

Decatur Band Mothers Club presents a Breakfast in Hollywood Friday January 30 at 8 p.m. in the Decatur armory with Marvin Rankin as master of ceremonies. Free coffee and doughnuts, craziest hat contest with a spring hat prize, Good Neighbor Contest nominations due Thursday noon, and performances by instrumental and vocal groups plus tap dance numbers. Proceeds help fund the Decatur high school band’s state contest.

Passenger on Hummingbird slashes wrists aboard train

S B Hayward, 43, of Danville Kentucky, boarding at Biloxi with a Louisville ticket, slashed his wrists and throat aboard the Hummingbird north of Birmingham. Railroad staff restrained him as two doctors and volunteers aided, and he was hospitalized in Cullman after the train reached the station.

Unhurt As Auto Skids Girl Has Leg Broken

Miss Betty Chambers and two companions were riding toward Athens when the car skidded on the wet highway five miles north of Cullman on U S 31 and overturned. While unhurt initially, Chambers later fell while climbing a roadside bank, breaking a small bone above her right ankle. She recuperates at home and will miss the current term at Alabama Polytechnic Institute.

Lions Group Back Meets

The Decatur Lions club sponsors a Hot Stove meeting for baseball fans on February 16 at 7 30 pm in the courthouse. Ned Frazier chairs a committee including Shorty Ogle Floyd Briscoe Homer Tankersley and Claude Carter. Frazier will meet Moulton and Athens clubs for support. Films of last year’s World Series and a clinic show baseball positions. several major leaguers are expected to attend and answer fan questions.

Gentry Named to Folsom Staff in Alabama

L W Gentry of Moulton was named a member of Governor James E. Folsom's personal staff as part of his second administration. The Associated Press dispatch from Montgomery notes ten staff members were appointed with predecessors moving to the state militia staff. Col W W Lyerly remains head of the honorary colonels. Morgan county campaign chairman William Eyster said the March of Dimes drive lagged as two Saturdays were slowed by weather. He urged immediate gifts, asking contributors to send a dollar or two rather than only dimes to aid the polio fight.

Miss Christine Powell Injured After Fall On Bank Street

Miss Christine Powell of 501 1-2 Bank Street fell in front of Kuhn's on Bank Street around 9 40 Saturday night and was taken to Decatur General Hospital by Brown's ambulance. The extent of her injuries was not immediately determined.

One More Week To Pay Your Poll Tax in Morgan County

The county urges voters to pay poll taxes by January 31 as February 1 falls on a Sunday. Attorney General ruling closes the poll tax list Saturday night to ensure payments before the legal deadline. Birmingham Eight Is Gied In Local Case

In Decatur, Judge Powell ruled that the Decatur parking meter ordinance is unconstitutional and void. The decision cites Birmingham’s earlier ruling that meters on public streets can be an unauthorized tax and a breach of street dedication. Four property owners challenged meters, arguing lack of authority and constitutional violations.
