Weather outlook for the state records partly cloudy and warmer today with colder North portion Friday. Local market quotes show middling at 34.5 cents and strict low at 33.5. Community notices report illnesses, church events, football coaching news at API, hospital patients, births, rabies testing, and transit updates.
A month-old boy, John Thomas Featherston of Rison Arkansas, was flown from the Panama Canal Zone to Mobile for special treatment. He remains very critical at Brookley Field station hospital with an abnormality that impairs eating and breathing and pneumonia. Army physicians plan to move him to a general hospital. his mother accompanied him aboard the Humanitarian evac plane as his father serves in the Canal Zone.
The Alabama Supreme Court upheld the will of former Governor Charles Henderson which creates a trust fund to build a hospital and schools in Pike County. The estate, estimated around 5 million dollars, funds a 20 year deferment before construction and a further 20 years for a crippled children's hospital, with heirs contesting perpetuity rules.
Jimmy Warren six sues through his father L A Warren for 300 against Harriet S Freeman and Jim Williams alleging a car struck him January 5 on E Church Street East of Bank Street. He claims lacerations abrasions a cerebral concussion and a fracture. John Sherill for plaintiff Charles Eyster defense.
Polls payments at the tax collector’s office and in Falkville and Hartselve totaled 1 962, with a February 1 deadline to insure voting rights this year. Veterans and those over 45 are exempt. many eligible voters have yet to pay, as 1947 and 1948 elections approach.
President Truman said there will be a declared Democratic candidate before the national convention in Philadelphia starting July 12. He declined to name the person but indicated an announcement is forthcoming and did not comment on Henry A. Wallace potentially joining the Democrats. Whitney endorsed Truman after his White House call amid prior railroad strike tensions.
President Truman said he is not in accord with former President Hoover’s view that European recovery commitments should be limited to 15 months and below 6.8 billion dollars. He endorsed Baruch’s recommendations aligned with his own economic program and urged a four year aid program with 6.8 billion for the first 15 months. Miss Ina Claire Dunaway, a Cotaco high school senior, was chosen as Morgan County Good Citizenship Girl. Her name advances to Alabama DAR selections and a state drawing for a Washington trip, joining other Morgan County finalists from Austinville Falkville Eva and Priceville high schools.
Curtis Crow, 23, of Hartselle, jailed in Morgan county on assault with intent to ravish. Deputies arrested him. warrant sworn by Judge W H Long. Four men held on motor carrier act violations. a fifth jailed on non support.
AFL President William Green urged today that management and labor voluntarily adopt a 45 hour work week with time and a half for the extra hours to boost production and help fight inflation. He said 16 million workers could be affected and tied the move to an approved anti inflation program excluding wage controls. The Senate Banking Committee planned an overtime session with grain industry witnesses as President Truman seeks selective wage and price controls.
Secretary of State Marshall explained the proposed recovery plan to aid Europe under the Marshall Plan for agriculture. He warned sharing scarce farm machinery and nitrogen fertilizer may cause some hardship for a few American farmers but called the sacrifices insignificant compared with the bigger goal of increasing Europe’s indigenous food supply.
A new dry goods store named Roden's will open Saturday at 214 E Moulton Street. C H Roden and wife from Falkville run the shop with their son Steve Roden and daughter-in-law from Hampton Va assisting. They have 12 years in Falkville and will stock ladies and children's ready to wear millinery and men's work clothes.
An office supply salesman Clifford Woodward George age 42 was held on federal kidnapping charges for abducting Dorothy Groover 30 a state employee in Tallahassee forcing her into a car and driving to Moultrie Georgia The FBI reports he attempted to inject her with a needle and a bent needle was found in the hotel room where the clerk heard her screams George was to be returned to face federal charges and appeared before a U S commissioner in Thomasville after being located in Moultrie
A 15 minute flurry of fine particles fell over the Drew Field weather station late last night and five minutes later small flakes began in mid town Tampa. Ground temperature was 55 degrees and the snowfall covered ground briefly before melting on contact. Meteorologist W W Talcott notes it is the sixth time Tampa has recorded snow in the weather records.
The United States disclosed a 1940 Soviet offer to join the German Italian Japanese Axis at a price Hitler would not pay. The State Department released a 362 page volume of secret German records detailing Moscow Berlin talks and the 1939 pact. It shows Stalin seeking a free hand in Finland a base near the Dardanelles and influence in the Middle East for four power Axis.
Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin told Parliament that Western Europe must unite to resist Soviet pressure and a possible new world war. He cited Poland Bulgaria Hungary and Romania as evidence of communist expansion and urged four power cooperation while opposing one power imposing systems on smaller states. Bevin outlined talks with Belgium the Netherlands Luxembourg and France and signaled future inclusion of Italy and others.
