The Associated Press reports Senator Pepper says the Solid South may be breaking up but too slow a shift for 1948. He cites protests over Truman’s civil rights program and asserts Truman will carry all Southern states again this year. Pepper notes divisions between so called Southern conservative Democrats and Northern Republicans.
Pierce County Sheriff L L Taylor said Mildred Aspinwall Teston 14 contacted her mother and said she was safe. James B Davis 22 a construction worker is charged with kidnapping and auto larceny after abducting Teston from Bristol Georgia where she married an 18 year old farm youth. Police pursue lead as search centers near Fort Valley Georgia.
Brig. Gen. Frank T. Hines resigns as ambassador to Panama effective March 1, after negotiating a defense bases agreement that the Panamanian assembly rejected. President Truman accepted the resignation with regret. U.S. troops to leave Panama bases.
John B. Baker, 30, a state witness in a Birmingham jewelry store robbery trial, testified he told police he robbed a $20,000 tourist camp job. He described the Oct. 30 Perry store heist with G. B. Parsons and others, tying Perry and his wife, seizing the safe combo, and fleeing by car then vanishing to Vincennes, Indiana. Baker denied immunity promises and noted his 1940 armed robbery conviction and wartime service. The four involved include Parsons Johnson and Duncan, with two others sought.
Philadelphia's 11,000 transit workers postponed their planned five day strike two hours before the midnight deadline. The walkout would have shut subway, elevated and bus services affecting about 3,000,000 riders. Local 234 CIO transport workers union leaders urged a break in tension as the company appears to concede on some demands.
Women of Decatur join sixty nations for the 21st World Day Of Prayer with services Friday at 3 pm in Westminster First Baptist St. John’s Episcopal Central Methodist Central Baptist Ninth Street Presbyterian and others. The day spans languages from Fiji to St. Lawrence Island and Tonga, with offerings shared among Christian student agencies.
The United States protests to Russia and Hungary over the January 14 abduction of two U S hangar attaches Lt Col Bernard Thielen and Lt Col Peter Kopzak by Soviet troops in Hungary. The note calls the act arbitrary and unjustified and urges respect for Hungarian sovereignty. The officers were released in Vienna after protests.
Weather forecast calls for cloudy conditions with rain and a warming trend across the South. Tennessee enjoyed sunshine as snow melted. Alabama faced fuel shortages and factories curbed output while travel remained unsettled on icy roads. Flood watches rose along rivers in Georgia and Alabama as several dams reported rising levels.
Mayor H. R. Summer announced he will urge creation of a city beautiful commission at Monday night’s City Council meeting following a planning commission session. The plan calls for new civic leaders, organizational representation, and citywide study with a small board and subcommittees.
Decatur's Salvation Memorial chapel will be formally dedicated to those who died in World War II. Lt. Col. John A. Morrison will give the dedicatory address at 3 30 p.m. The ceremony will include a plaque from the VFW post and a flag presentation by the American Legion. Various officials and veterans will participate, with musical selections and a singing solo featured.
The Chamber of Commerce member drive directed by Redus Col begins next Tuesday after a board supper at Hotel Lyons. A $20 000 budget is recommended to sustain chamber activities including beef and dairy shows 4 H rally and building expenses for hog show. The rural committee pledges aid for extension service insemination project. Plans include a publication titled What They Owe featuring excerpts from newspapers and magazines about the city.
Congressman Bob Im of the eighth district filed for a second term by delivering qualification papers from Washington to Miss Sibyl Pool, Secretary of State in Montgomery. No opposition had been indicated yet.
Estimates on losses from Cullman fires remain unfinished. Firefighter John Hassenbein, injured by a falling window frame, has been released to recover at home. Insurance inspectors plan to review the Fuller siding ruins while Eureka hotel owner Mrs. Kinney awaits appraisal findings days hence.

Mr and Mrs Walter Daniels Tanner unity have received word that the body of their late son Pfc James Lamon Daniels US Marine Corps is en route home for burial. Pfc Daniels died December 3 1942 after being wounded November 25 1942 on Guadalcanal. He had been an assistant Pa farm agent and served in Winston De Kalb and Madison counties. Services are planned and arrangements will be announced later.
City police investigated a daylight hold up at a Gulf filling station on Lee Street and Second Avenue. The robber, about 21, five eight or nine, 145 to 150 pounds, wore a grey checked suit and blue shirt and fled toward First Avenue after threatening two men with implied gunfire. Chief J B Whitmire urged public tip lines and noted a local cab ferried the suspect to Hartselle.
Two fliers died and eight were injured, two critically, when a Navy Martin Marine aircraft crashed about 20 miles south of Jacksonville Florida after attempting to land following a weather delay. The plane had 10 aboard returning from a training flight from San Juan Puerto Rico.
A federal grand jury indicted the CIO and its president Philip Murray for violating the Taft Hartley Act by spending union funds on political endorsements. The CIO argues the act violates free press and invites a court test with editorial support for a Baltimore race. See Way on page 2.
Prices for grain and cotton showed a mid day rally after earlier limit declines. London markets erased most losses while Chicago opening sent wheat and corn down the limit before partial recovery. Cotton rebounded in New York as short covering and trade buying resumed.
E T Maynard named by Secretary Anderson as having earned hundreds of thousands of dollars from price breaks in wheat and oats said profits were overstated and that the market downward trend was evident from newspapers. He claimed no inside information and described his stance as ordinary trading with a large short position but estimated profits closer to two hundred thousand dollars.
Secretary Ander son says small traders caused the boom and bust in the market with one Chicago trader profiting as much as $400000 on the break. He insists there was no inside information or corruption. World markets turned, with London Manila Sydney and Copenhagen slipping as cocoa and hides dropped in New York. Butter fell up to 2 12 cents, tallow and grease down nine cents, hog prices up 50 cents to $1 a hundred pounds, and arrivals the smallest for a Wednesday since Oct 9, 1946. Cattle and sheep held steady as retailers report wary shoppers and day to day buying. Cotton at New Orleans over $10 a bale. See REACTIONS On Page 2.
