A blizzard blanketed the Atlantic Coast driving wind and snow across at least 14 states. Air travel halted, schools shut, and many roads became nearly impassable as an unusually mild winter collapsed into a white nightmare.
Extreme winter weather leaves air travel near standstill at major airports and forces school closures across the 14 state area. Alabama reports one inch snow cover as temperatures hover near 20 degrees. expected to drop further with icy roads and emergency measures in place.
The Morgan County drive to legalize alcohol faces changes as resignations from three steering committee members create vacancies. John Gort, Robert Korbel, and Jack Sherman say they remain pro legalization but cannot work with current leadership, urging support for the referendum and new group leadership. George Royer fills two vacancies with John O'Donnell and William Quarles joining, with a third seat to be filled. O'Donnell backs legalizing tax uses. Reverend W A Crim notes further lines on Page 3.
Senate Armed Services chairman Richard B. Russell faulted the Pentagon for a rising toll of U S aircraft in Southeast Asia and urged stronger airfield protections. He cited missing World War II style bunkers to separate planes and limit damage from attacks.

Ice covered streets slowed traffic at the 1st Ave and Summer Ave crossing in Decatur. L.R. Jenkins and John Powell helped at the scene as Decatur Iron and Steel Co. would not operate, leaving drivers to cope with the slick morning commute.
West Limestone County leaders push to start the Dr. D. E. Jackson Memorial Hospital project with a $240000 loan from the SBA. Regional director Paul R. Brunson says processing will begin once the community raises about $48000 or 20 percent of the cost. Local officials report $15000 to $20000 in the bank with pledges likely pushing total above $50000 including donated equipment from Evelyn Jackson. If funds hold, construction could begin soon and the loan application will be filed after a final check of assets and local contributions.
In Operation Gadsden, a mine detonated from across the Rach Cai Bac in Cambodia wounded several American soldiers. The 196th Light Infantry Brigade hikers the riverbank about 75 miles northwest of Saigon found the mine pattern hung from trees. Wounds were classified as light. no Communist forces sighted. Meanwhile Viet Cong shelled four airfields as 143 Communist soldiers died in ground combat before a lunar New Year truce.
New York stocks fall as a blizzard prompts an early market close. Chicago grain gains on late export demand while corn and oats trade softly. Hog prices slide 25 to 50 cents with top at 21.00, slaughter steers steady to down 50 cents with top 26.25.
