AP reports two year bombing campaign against North Vietnam raises debate over effectiveness. Critics cite pilots killed or missing, aircraft losses, and limited impact on infiltration and negotiations. Generals note North Vietnam disperses targets near populated areas. policy limits strike areas.
Diplomatic sources in Peking report Liu Shao-chi and Teng Hsiapding ousted from government and party posts. Reports say Maoist purge continues with supporters still holding power in wide areas. Neither has exercised official duties in Peking since last November.
Michele Ray, 28, the French newswoman and former Paris model, was released after 21 days in Viet Cong custody. She arrived at An Khe in black pajamas, said she felt great, and plans to continue traveling South Vietnam if possible after rest in Saigon. Her press credentials remain valid and she received a receipt for belongings taken during capture.
New York stocks fall as cotton remains quiet while Chicago grain futures show weakness. Wheat, corn, oats and soybeans slip on light demand, with liquidation in soybeans. Hog prices steady to 25 cents higher, top $21.25. slaughter steers up 25-50 cents, topping $26.60.
U S troops launched a major new push against Viet Cong positions in War Zone C and began defoliation of the southern half of the DMZ to expose invasion routes. Ground forces reported over 100 enemy killed in engagements while B 52s conducted two raids. Air combat near Hanoi saw MIG 17s in a brief exchange with F 4C Phantoms and F 105 Thunderchiefs.
Bobby Dodd announced retirement from coaching at Georgia Tech citing poor health. He will remain at Tech as athletic director and transition out of the coaching position.
In Pasadena scientists report Lunar Orbiter 3 midcourse tweak was “right on the money” with initial data. Tracking will confirm results. earlier remarks praised the Cape Kennedy launch as having fantastic accuracy as the 850 pound craft adjusts speed and trajectory for a safe moon orbit for photography.
Morgan County ministers met in executive session at the 6th Ave Church of God to discuss the wet dry issue. The pro liquor leader deferred action on a government referendum as the meeting, closed to the press, was about to begin.
President Johnson urged Congress to fund a bold crime reduction program with at least 50 million dollars for the next fiscal year. The Safe Streets and Crime Control Act would provide grants for planning anti crime campaigns and for research and pilot projects to help states and cities uproot crime.
Three of four Morgan County Jail inmates foiled an escape attempt by sawing through a steel bar on a third floor window and lowering a blanket rope to the ground about 2:30 a.m. Deputy Willard Fowler spotted one man, two escaped over a fence, two were captured, one at large. Escaped suspect unnamed. three recaptured are James Moore 30, Jerry Wayne Campbell 18, and Roger McDonald burglary and related charges.
Incomplete returns from Sunday's presidential contest show Gen Anastasio Somoza Jr leading with a wide margin. The AP report notes the Somoza family's continued control of political power in Nicaragua amid partial results.
The forecast warns of little snow with several hours of flurries. Temperatures started at 47 degrees before dropping to 40 by 8 am and are set to fall to 19 tonight. The Huntsville Weather Bureau expects no snow accumulation and a freeze reaching 32 degrees tomorrow.
