Cloudy with rain in North and Central portions this afternoon and in South tonight and Friday. Cooler conditions, moderate southerly winds along the coast shifting to northeasterly by Friday. Decatur market noon quote shows middling at 34.5 and strict low at 33.5.
Fresh snowfall blanket sections of the country disrupts transportation and closes schools from the Midwest to the Northeast. New York City reports 5.1 inches with trains delayed and 97 flights canceled before operations resume. Rain and snow relieve drought in Northern California as fuel supplies tighten elsewhere.
The National Safety Council reports 1947 fatalities at 100000 with 10.5 million injuries and 6.7 billion dollars in economic loss. Home accidents lead, traffic deaths down four percent, public and civilian non motor deaths rise, and drownings total 7900 with 2600 firearm deaths.
Governor Fielding L. Wright called a statewide Mississippi meeting for February 12 to organize a rebel movement against national Democrats. He urged precincts to form a united South wide leadership and vowed an all out fight to oppose anti Southern forces at the upcoming convention. Wright said a Southern bolt may follow if leaders push anti Southern legislation.
Atlanta February reports say Southern Democrats, angered by President Truman, consider launching their own political group. Many express hurt feelings as they weigh a regional party option amid national tensions.
New York February ir man David E Lilienthal of the atomic energy commission said today the United States is improving the atom bomb. He warned the threat remains that atomic energy could be used for destruction on an unprecedented scale and urged worldwide understanding of the atomic world as the best hope to prevent misuse.
Walter P. Reuther denounces industry and farmers for tight output to inflate profits. He calls the Marshall Plan cost overruns a threat to Europe recovery and U S living standards and urges Congress to boost funding. He backs higher steel oil power coal and related production while GOP senators push plan changes.
Two teen inmates at the Missouri state training school for boys were held for attempting to strangle 15-year-old Junior Earl Hickman with a belt. State patrolman on guard duty stopped the attack at Boonville facility amid recent Senate and House investigations. Earlier months saw two strangulation slayings and several escapes.
President Truman dismissed Republican calls to slash the 39.7 billion dollar budget as mere talk. He noted the 2.5 billion target approved by a Senate subcommittee remains nonbinding and that tax cuts hinge on reductions from his budget, with leaders split on the extent of cuts and tax relief.
The Morgan county tax office reports 3481 residents paid poll tax from October 1, 1947, to January 31, 1948, marking an increase over last year though below two years ago. A total of $9,924 was collected for schools. Registration continues the first and third Mondays at the courthouse, and those turning 21 between Oct 1, 1947 and Oct 1, 1948 who meet voting requirements may register and vote without poll tax until October.
November business activity in Decatur, based on bank debits, fell short of October but rose above November 1946. Debits value remained the highest since October 1946, aided by price increases and a 23.3 percent rise from October, with November’s end slightly under October.
Washington reports the administration backing nationwide voluntary food rationing to curb costs as meat shortages loom in spring. The Agriculture Department convened 18 groups to discuss voluntary limits while Congress debates inflation measures and grain use by distillers.

Gen Taha Hashimi, formerly Iraqi, was reported as accepted as commander in chief amid meeting of Arab military and tribal leaders from five countries in Damascus Syria on February 5.
Mrs Cheslie Parrish fought for life at Decatur General hospital after a car collision near Decatur along with her husband who died. Her daughter Mrs L L Smart and her son Tom Parrish arrived from Detroit by plane and train to be with her, while the body was held at Browns for funeral plans. The crash involved a coal truck driven by John David Sanderson and left Parrish in critical condition with the truck occupants uninjured. the car was said to be knocked 175 feet by the impact.
Mrs. Harry Truman and her party paused in Montgomery en route to New Orleans. Gov. James E. Folsom greeted her warmly, exchanging pleasantries as she stepped from the train. He noted his recent announcement to seek the Democratic nomination for President and welcomed Mrs. Truman, along with her companions Mrs. John R. Steilman and Mrs. Frank Boykin.
Gov. James E. Folsom almost got a ticket as his chauffeur parked in a restricted area in front of Union Station. A Montgomery officer began a ticket but tore it up after realizing the car belonged to the governor.
In Mobile tonight Folsom asks Mrs Truman if she will stay for Mardi Gras but she says she must return to Washington Monday. The Governor notes the demanding duties. Margaret Truman accompanies Mrs Truman as they depart amid conversation about responsibilities.
President Truman warned the price situation remains alarming amid a broad market decline. Grain losses led Chicago pits lower while New York stocks eased and commodities generally fell with economists warning inflation could worsen. A. W. Zelemek predicted a pronounced price break might free scarce goods and curb jitters among speculators.
World famed violinist Dave Rubinoff performed for the Decatur Kiwanis. His first piece Ah Sweet Mystery of Life drew strong applause and he continued with Brahms as the audience hummed along. The concert is at Riverside High School at eight o'clock with tickets available at the door.
