Morgan County Registrars say no intent to remove eligible voters. They note many named in purge still hold citizenship and call list publication useful for corrections. They plan to refine the voter registry as they work toward an accurate roll for the next election.
John H. Cameron aged 59 who faced murder conviction and a 20 year term will soon be freed after years of prison, a dramatic escape in 1914, time as a respected Sylacauga citizen, and subsequent recapture under the alias J. B. Davis.
Officials of the Alabama and Georgia highway commissions will meet in Anniston February 20 to decide terminal points at the state line for highways under construction in the interior of both states. The meeting was postponed from Atlanta because of the illness of Henry J. W. Colonel Wooly Finnell and John S. Turner are expected to attend.
Rev George Boyd announced that the mission study will be continued at the First Methodist Church. Three minute addresses will precede both the morning and evening services.
A quarterly conference was conducted last night at Central Methodist Church by Rev. George Boyd in place of Rev. R. T. Tyler who is away from the city.
Churches in Decatur join the Y M C A to entertain about 125 visiting older boys from North Alabama for the Older Boys Conference. The session runs most of three days and those willing to help were asked to contact local Y M C A authorities.
A Decatur yard and freight house meeting of Safety First Rough Handling and Solicitation committees was led by E R Wolfe with Mose Minor of Louisville Kentucky speaking on claim prevention. Minor noted 1929 losses of about 650000 dollars for the Louisville and Nashville R A and urged further reductions for 1930 while stressing first class shipment quality to preserve public goodwill.
The F. H. Formby company of Piedmont seeks certificates of convenience and necessity to operate four freight carrier bus lines. The Alabama Public Service Commission set the petition for hearing in Birmingham on February 14. Proposed routes include Anniston to the Georgia line and Atlanta via Heflin Fruithurst and Bell Mills. Gadsden to the Georgia line via Piedmont Borden Springs and Palatine. Talladega to Montgomery via Sycamore Goodwater Alexander City and Wetumpka. and Gadsden to Anniston via Glencoe Willington and Blue Mountain.
Mrs. D. D. McGehee will lead a missions study during a week of prayer at the First Methodist church. All attendees were urged to be present for the discussion.
Edward A. O Neal president of the Alabama Farm Bureau Federation said after a Washington conference that farm leaders favor private operation of Muscle Shoals for cheap fertilizer. He supported Hoover’s private lease plan and noted a recommendation to the President to approve the Capper Ketcham act to fund agricultural extension work.
The Daily will print congressional, state, circuit and county candidacy notices once weekly rather than daily until the August 12 primary. The change aims to keep costs affordable and equal for all candidates. Additional publications beyond once a week will cost proportionally more.
When the Morgan county grand jury meets again it is expected to conduct a thorough inspection of the county jail. The aim is to recommend improvements as recent jail breaks raise safety concerns. Reports say the jail is poorly equipped to hold dangerous prisoners.
Candidates and prospective office seekers traverse the county conference circuits with advisers to map winning strategies as August primaries loom. The contest promises to be among the most keenly watched in years at state national and county levels.
The Senior B Y P U of the Southside Baptist church will enjoy a social meeting Friday evening at the pastorium. The program begins at 7 o'clock and all members are invited.
A splendid crowd gathered for an excellent program by the Vaughan quartet of Lawrence Tennessee. The group, well known beyond the town, has a wide reputation from radio broadcasts heard nationwide.
Joe Broadus a senior at Washington and Lee University in Lexington Virginia is on a short visit returning to the university probably Friday.
G. S. Weaver of Belle Mina mingled with friends in the city on Tuesday afternoon.
Eight firemen were hurt today in two Manhattan and Queens blazes. Nicholas Markey, 35, suffered a fractured spine and Charles Hoffman, 43, had fractured ribs and concussions. The Esketters hotel porch extension in Queens collapsed, destroying the landmark with an estimated $50,000 loss.
The Farmers State Bank in Lumikin Georgia was robbed last night of about 8000 dollars. Burglars forced the front door and cut into the safe with an acetylene torch. Officers found the torch a flashlight a heavy chisel and a tarpaulin on the floor. Police suspect the tarpaulin hid sounds and flame while the doors were breached. The exact amount cannot be fixed until checks are completed but the loss is reportedly fully insured.
Taft shows slight improvement today after a quiet night and comfortable morning. President Hoover, noting the better condition, plans to visit the Taft home at 3 30 this afternoon, continuing a long friendship with the former president.
The official board of the Westmaneer Presbyterian Church met in May, discussing routine business and planning for closing the church year.
Market note records local cotton prices with grades strict middling and middling at 15.00 and 12.75 cents per pound with quantities shown as 1475 and 13.75 respectively.
In East Brewton Alabama on Monday night dentist Dr E D Dozier was shot while defending his wife Mrs Dozier during a robbery the assailant fled and bloodhounds failed to track the scent after two shots were fired. Dozier injured but recovering. Police questioned a man held at Escambia pending further inquiry.
North Alabama friends learn Judge Thomas Wert of Decatur has been re elected president of the American Standard Life Insurance Company based in Birmingham. Stockholders praised his efficient leadership as reports show a $3 000 000 increase in insurance in force during the year at the Birmingham annual meeting.
County officers prepare for a four week Circuit Court session opening February 16 presided by Judge James. The grand jury will hear cases and many witnesses prospective jurors and litigants will be summoned before opening.
Public invited to a 7:00 p m Community Sing at Westside Presbyterian Church. Out of town singers will attend and an engaging program is being arranged for attendees.
Troop 16 Boy Scouts will hold a regular session Friday at 7:00 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
The Decatur Daily of Decatur Alabama won a certificate of distinguished rating in the national community newspaper contest held by the University of Illinois School of Journalism. Twenty-six daily and 164 weekly publications participated. awards announced in January.
Alabama Legion numbers near 1 000 in 1930 but many posts trail last year. The week of February 22 is designated Past Commanders Week with all past commanders and adjutants pledging time to boost membership.
Senator Harris of Georgia said President Hoover informed him he would approve a $6,000,000 appropriation for seeds and fertilizer loans to farmers in storm stricken areas of the southeast. Harris said Hoover called him this morning to confirm the decision urged by a delegation of Democratic senators and representatives.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce board will meet twice monthly. President Robert Jervis announced meetings likely on the second and fourth Tuesday evenings each month.
Miss Margaret Sumner, daughter of Capt. Allen Sumner, wears a party dress from her great grandmother’s era. The Sumner home houses furniture and a portrait linked to Boston’s 19th century social circle, with the gown once a greyish orchid taffeta dating to 1845. Other gowns reside in the Smithsonian.
The Morgan County poll list shows 119 names removed or gone with at least 37 residents still listed locally. Registrars offer those on the list a chance to explain why they remain eligible at a Monday courthouse session.
