The United States charges Romania with violating its peace treaty by crushing opposition to communists in Bucharest. Marshall signals possible talks on Austria peace terms as Big Four deputies may reconvene February 20 in London.
Deputy Premier Hussein Farhoodi said Iran will deny Soviet charges that the United States is converting Iran into a military base. An Army spokesman called the U S mission in Iran advisory and not directing Iranian army affairs. Russia claimed airports and frontier mapping. Washington rejected the note as false.
The Truman administration urged Congress again to keep rent controls and grant authority to fix meat and other food prices amid ongoing Capitol Hill debate on high living costs. J Charles F Brannan led the briefing as the administration pressed for action.
Frigid Arctic air grips the Midwest with temperatures plunging to 25 below at International Falls and Pembina. Snow and freezing rain disrupt highways from Kansas to the Western Missouri, while Pacific coast rain lessens drought in California and San Francisco.
About 2 to 3 million German workers in the British and American occupation zones staged a 24 hour protest over food shortages. In Württemberg Baden General Lucius D. Clay praised the action but warned hunger strikes would not secure more food from the United States. Clay traveled by private train to Stuttgart on idled rails.
Gen. Lucius D. Clay rebuked Pastor Martin Niemoeller and the Evangelical church in Hesse for urging defiance of the de Nazification program. Clay said no action was decided but a note may be sent and an American official may speak to Niemoeller.
Industrial life halted across a vast area as German workers join a 24 hour hunger strike. Nearly 3,000,000 in Hamburg participate as strikes spread from Harburg to Stuttgart threatening production in the British zone and Wurttemberg Baden in the American sector.
Morgan County March of Dimes drive ends Friday with total donations of 2844.57. Schools and county workers were urged to have contributions in by campaign close. Organizers praised participants despite poor weather and noted a short of the quota. A theft report cited a collection box at the Capitol theatre box office. The Spinsters club reportedly collected 21 dollars as the Princess.
In New Delhi on February 3 4 mobs attacked members of two militant Hindu factions the Mahasabha and the RSS amid outrage over Gandhi s assassination Police reported many arrests while others were beaten and stoned The Nehru government banned private armies and urged restraint as investigations continued into Friday s murder with no mercy promised for those spreading hate.
A fugitive from Atmore prison camp, Leonard Monk, 38, was recaptured near Mobile after a month on the run. City detectives arrested him on three armed robbery charges, after he reportedly fled with a pistol taken from an Atmore guard. Monk claimed to have been in Shubuta, Mississippi, during most of his escape.
U S Chief Brannaman praised Decatur VFW Post 4190 for its growth becoming Alabama’s second largest. He spoke on peace through national security and air power, lauded Montgomery VA hospital, and presented honors to Post 4190 Commander Charlie Harvey. Attendees included state and local leaders from Huntsville Athens and Montgomery.
Queen Wilhelmina forecast that a United States of Indonesia will contribute to the Marshall plan once formed. She spoke in a prepared broadcast addressing wartime Allies about the Netherlands East Indies where a Dutch sponsored interim government unites most of Indonesia except the republic. The interim body aims to pave the way for a free sovereign federation under the Dutch crown.
Washington report states Senator Cain proposes voluntary rent increases for long term leases with no ceiling protection beyond controls. Tenants may accept higher rents but cannot seek lease terms after control expiry while meat rationing would be considered in a separate banking subcommittee. Vote realignments cloud chances of passage.
The Senate put the Republican tax cutting bill on hold, signaling possible reductions from the House 6.5 billion plan and delaying action until a budget committee report due by February 15. Leaders expect a smaller cut, potentially around 4 billion, to win veto override support.

Mayor H R Summer authorized a contract with National Safety Engineers for lane markers to be installed in Decatur at intersections. Police pay raise denied after a petition. Council rejected reducing the laundromat license fee and let All Wright Pastry Shop continue under its current license. City leaders reviewed general Decatur conditions.
Five hundred paratroopers, protected against cold, await a mass jump at Wheelersack air field five miles north of Carthage New York. Eighteen C 82 Flying Boxcars stand ready for Exercise Snowdrop over a snowbound zone as Lt Col Robert H Wienecke leads the operation, which runs through Thursday with three phases.
Madison Wisconsin February 3 1949 A Superior Court judge ruled a Wisconsin law banning publication of a rape victim s identity unconstitutional and invalid The case involved William T Evjue charged with publishing a young woman s name who reported the rape by two men The men are serving life terms for murder Evjue challenged the law as ambiguous and uncertain ruling supports that view.
Mobile Alabama February 3 United States Senator John Sparkman who was elected two years ago to serve out the unfinished term of the late John Bankhead has drawn no opposition. He is set for the upcoming election with no declared challengers.
Stewart F. Reid representing Howard T. Beaver and associates arrives in Chicago to organize a $600,000 finance campaign for a Flint Tennessee Valley tuberculosis hospital serving 12 North Alabama counties. State funds total $135,000 with $160,000 from counties. federal funds cover a third of $1.3 million.
The Tuscaloosa County Democratic Executive Committee endorsed President Harry Truman for re nomination as Democratic candidate for President. The resolution urged full backing of Truman’s foreign policy and program as the party’s leader. James W Mustin Jr. presided and Rufus Bealle was elected permanent secretary.
In Washington on Feb 3 Alabama senators and representatives including Sparkman Grant Manasco Rains Hobbs and Jones uniformly opposed Truman proposed FEPC anti-lynching and anti-poll tax measures. Sparkman stated he has always opposed such federal intervention. Grant said he wants to study other proposals before action.
McCorvey of Alabama criticizes President Truman and his advisers for civil rights policy claiming it harms Truman's prestige with Southerners. He urges care in platform writing to win Solid South votes and notes continued support for renomination. He asserts segregation will persist in the South by law or custom and blames radical groups within the party for the President's proposals.
Rep Jarman criticizes Federal anti discrim measures and FEPC while defending Southern life and priorities. Rep Rains opposes anti synch and poll tax plans as ill advised. Rep Hobbs agrees with opposition to such proposals. Rep Jones vows to block any federal dictates altering Southern ways of life in Alabama.
In a heated early floor exchange Dixie democrats accuse President Truman of stabbing Southern supporters by seeking laws against lynching and racial discrimination. The paper notes a TALK on Page 2.
