Five men were moved from Morgan County jail to Kilby prison to serve sentences from Morgan circuit court. Ben Stover pleaded guilty to burglary and theft from Nehi Bottling Co and received two years. Other inmates include W. E. McDaniel four years on two charges, Meeks six years on forgery, Gardner two years for second degree burglary, and Guy Edgar Thompson two years for forgery.
The United States plans a broad extension of the Stop Russia program with a multi million dollar military aid package for Western Europe. President Truman will base his foreign policy address on these plans, coordinating State Department efforts with economic aid including the Marshall Plan nations. Budgeted military aid targets Greece and China with substantial costs next year and includes weapons for Britain France Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
Decatur residents are urged to donate 3000 to match 3000 from ten Jewish families. Co chairs Sam Alexander and Harold Michelson report non Jewish gifts total 1417.95, about half the target. An appeal by letter seeks support. contributions may go to Alexander Michelson or The Decatur Daily.
In the Twisp Washington fire report investigators said two bodies were found in the remains of a two story frame hotel burned Tuesday. Sheriff L R Ross cautioned no definite word on others dead as earlier estimates ranged up to five. Hotel owner Tom Campbell was identified among the victims. a second man was believed to be Stanley Parkinson who had been missing since the blaze. Eleven escaped but the hotel register was destroyed.
The House Small Business Committee faulted the Tenos Valley Authority for not cheapening fertilizer production and ingredients. It alleged TVA lost nearly 4 million dollars in fiscal 1947 and found no justification for export subsidies to a cooperative selling TVA ammonium nitrate.
Washington editors report Democratic leaders work on a plan to bypass rules committee for Truman policies. A move to bar Rep Rankin from the unAmerican activities committee was discussed but not debated publicly. A meeting with Speaker-designate Rayburn is sought to push the proposal to President Truman.
Reno and nearby towns faced ongoing tremors after an early yesterday earthquake that caused widespread damage but no injuries. University of Nevada seismologist Vincent P Gianella warned of more quakes possibly a heavy one, noting the quake's effects were milder due to population and building density. Tom Chambers installed the 1949 officers including Charles Winston Redus Collier and John Harlow. Rev Glass received a merit certificate and past president’s button as he reflected on 1948 service.

Pensacola Florida December 30 Police sought the mother of a two month old baby girl whose body was found by a quail in a swamp west of Pensacola. A coroner s jury viewed the body and recessed until January 31 without a report. Sheriff Kendrick said the infant was murdered, beaten on the head, with exposure cited as the cause of death. The body lay in cold water six miles west of Pensacola on Highway 90, wrapped in a pink wool blanket and a diaper, face covered, with the right arm raised toward the neck.
Dr. J. W. Gardner of the Southern Baptist home mission board in Atlanta was named president of the Southern Baptist Conference of Deaf Workers. Seventeen church leaders from seven states elected him to lead efforts to organize better the work among deaf Baptists in Memphis.
Right of way deeds have been made to Morgan county by Eva area property owners to create a road from Eva to Cullman. Gov James E. Folsom proposed the route with Morgan county bearing no portion of the expense. Two miles lie in Morgan and about 11 miles in Cullman. Deeded property includes Robert Adams Noma Carnell Eva Church of Christ Eva Methodist church and several Holmes and Ryan family members.
A district driver's license inspector faced a car trouble tale while en route to Athens. The well known highway patrolman ran out of gas after his car stopped running, prompting a ride to Athens and a garage visit.
President Truman, returning from Missouri, spoke of calm as his DC-6 waited in dense fog for 44 minutes before a safe descent into a National airport. He plans for the State of the Union, economic report, and budget requests with Congress set to convene.
In Nanking reports swirl on Chiang Kai Shek's future and peace talks with the communists. Spokesman Shen Chang Chuan says leaders came for consultations, not a conference, as arrivals delayed by bad weather.
Harold McClanahan, an instructor at Decatur trade school, was badly injured Wednesday when a large tree limb fell while he was cutting a tree on his property along E. Rock Street. He ran but tangled in a barb wire fence. the limb struck his back near the neck. He is hospitalized with severe chest injuries. neck injury feared but not confirmed.
