Anti-American demonstrators hurled three firecrackers at Vice President Agnew’s car in Manila. A rock flew near the limousine as it entered the U.S. Embassy compound escorted by about 20 security agents. No injuries were reported and Agnew dismissed fear.
Three members of a Cincinnati family were killed when their car struck a bridge abutment and plunged down an embankment on Interstate 65 near Lacon. The dead include Mary Frances Warren 59 Thomas Winford Warren 35 and Lisa Marvin four. Five other relatives were injured and hospitalized in Birmingham.
Five mystery gunboats slipped from Cherbourg on Christmas, heading through the eastern Mediterranean toward Haifa. Israeli radio traffic suggested an Israeli flotilla near Sicily, while British and Soviet naval movements monitored the area. The U S Sixth Fleet and NATO sources declined comment as diplomats weighed potential impact.

Governor Albert Brewer announced Alabama finished the year with its finest industrial development record. Capital invested in new and expanded industry topped 500 million dollars, the third highest total in state history, while new jobs reached 27 939, the largest ever. He noted a shift to highly skilled plants and emphasized young people can pursue strong careers in state industry.
