Nashville Tennessean publisher Illiman Evans says Senator McKellar struck him in the face at the Mayflower hotel in Washington. Evans, who avoided returning a blow, noted they have political differences but no enmity. McKellar offered no detailed comment.
Retail stores in Decatur will be closed all day on New Year’s Day. Beginning Thursday January 6 stores will resume a half day closing each Thursday as announced by Sidney Patterson, chairman of the retail merchants committee of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce.
A Columbia man Charles Daniel Wilson faces manslaughter charges over the death of Reed Campbell a 60 year old Heflin construction worker killed when struck by Wilson s car in Heflin Alabama. Investigators say Wilson said he reached for a road map and lost control of the vehicle.
Sumner Welles, former Undersecretary of State, improved after exposure shock from a frozen-field incident near his Oxon Hill home. Police, who planned queries, dropped the case as Mrs. Welles expressed satisfaction there was no foul play.

Two men died in traffic accidents near Birmingham today. Robert M. Goodwin, 34, was fatally injured in a collision involving a bus on Bessemer Street at 5 A.M. Three others were injured. James Minor, 21, died at Hillman Hospital from injuries suffered December 25 when his car was struck by a train near Calera.
President Truman refused to identify Soviet officials who favor an understanding with the United States. He spoke at a luncheon in Missouri, and Press Secretary Ross said no additional names would be released. The remarks followed his harsh critique of the Russian government over blocking peace efforts.
The cost of the cold war will rise next year to about 21.0 billion dollars, with foreign policy financing about half of Truman’s 42 to 43 billion dollar budget. Military outlays rise to roughly 13.5 billion dollars, while the China aid program and Western Europe aid remain uncertain.

Twelve airmen stranded up to three weeks on a Greenland ice cap were rescued by a C-47 from Bluie West Eight base after a B-47 pickup near the crash site. The USS Saipan supported the operation as it moved through stormy Atlantic waters toward Labrador, with plans to return the men to Bluie West One if possible.
FBI Agent James D. Good reported a small portion of the $20,000 stolen from the Bushnell Florida National Bank has been found. Three men linked to the daylight robbery were arrested in Gainesville and Jacksonville.

Devereaux Tomlinson, a 25 year old Philadelphia man who served in World War II, sought a federal injunction to block his induction into a segregated U.S. Army. He argued a segregated unit would cause humiliation and deny training and advancement available to white inductees. A hearing was set for Thursday morning in U.S. district court.
The five year old son of Dr G M Wallace was killed during a Christmas visit in Snyder Texas. The shooting occurred when the boy moved toward a back room where the pistol belonged to the doctor’s brother in law. The doctor, an ENT specialist from Decatur, planned to return after funeral services held in Snyder.
