Southern Bell Company outlines substantial 1929 expenditures for Alabama and surrounding counties to expand telephone service. J B Cassels cites readiness for rural and town area expansion with past five years showing over 125 million spent in the southeast.
Graves County health officials report at least 300 new cases in Graves County and a rise in the death rate. Mayfield, Ky. December 27. Public health officials estimate a sharp increase in cases and fatalities this week.
The 1929 Privilege tax for the city of Decatur is published today on page eight of The Daily. City clerk E. W. Collier prepared the schedule with city attaches and notes several new business forms.
Officials here warn against turning in false fire alarms as costly fire truck runs strain municipal funds. Recent false alarms prompted expensive responses from local fire crews and elevated concern over wasted resources.
Olle Finn, a Morgan County veteran, survived World War I and earned the Croix de Guerre for single handedly capturing a machine gun nest. He returned home to Morgan County after hospital care and years of service, later joining the Hartselle aviation corps and the local National Guard as a charter member.
Funeral services were held for George Dugger of Sisco Alabama four miles north of Athens. The Limestone county youth died instantly when a shotgun discharged while he paused to greet friends in Pettusville. He was carried to his cousin John Martin's home and buried at New Garden cemetery. He is survived by his parents a brother two sisters and other relatives.
Decatur contractors and real estate men report an exceptionally good building outlook for 1929. Plans for considerable construction are under way and a rumor of an unusually large undertaking circulated in realty circles. Announcement of plans is expected soon.
The Daily informs Decatur merchants and residents that starting January 3 1929 all advertising copy must reach the newspaper offices by 5 p m on the preceding publication day. Management urges cooperation to improve planning display and presentation.
In Mobile Alabama on December 27 motor timber worker Bill Lewis denied that Albert Bedwell, a Calvert white man, helped kill C. C. Coffee, the 73 year old retired life insurance agent. Lewis testified he saw four men strike Coffee with clubs and later denied involvement by others. A grand jury may be convened after a shotgun found at a trapper camp near the Tombigbee River.
Preliminary work has begun for the Victor Hanson cups awarded by the Birmingham News for the best weekly paper in the state and the weekly paper serving the community best. The awards will be made in January. The committee includes Grover C. Hall editor of the Montgomery Advertiser E T Raiford editor of the Selma Times Journal and B M Bloodworth editor of The Daily.
Decatur city council will set final assessments next month for the paving of Alabama street and the installation of storm and sanitary sewers in that section. The improvement ordinances were completed several weeks ago.
Newly elected Decatur Kiwanis officers led by H L Peterson will assume duties at the annual meeting at 6 15 p m at the M A. Club reports will recount a year of civic programs including Trade Day Community Christmas Tree and citizen recognition with W W Fussell’s agricultural win. The new board includes W M Bailey D D McGehee W H Ritter Clyde Hendrix Barrett C Shelton and S A Lynne as trustee.
18 IMPROVING W. H. Turner of Louisville and Nashville shop, at 321 Fourth Avenue West, is improving after a machinery accident. His left middle finger was amputated, but reports say the wound shows no infection and recovery is expected soon.
A Newark New Jersey robber, Frank Orlando, killed in a Chicago furniture store shootout after using a clerk as a shield. Police Officers David Griffin and Sergeant Joseph Starshak cornered him as he and two accomplices fled a lunchroom robbery. Orlando died on the scene amid a hail of bullets that also injured a clerk.
A lone bandit killed watchman Henry W. Gow at the Guggenheim laboratories in New York after gas was thrown and a driver Elmer Mayhew and helper Chester McCauley were bound. Mayhew, who drove in, reported the intruder opened gates, bound the men, robbed Mayhew of 24 dollars, and escaped.
Thomas P. Rochell of Pettusville, 78, is not recovering as quickly as hoped after a broken leg suffered when he turned in a chair at the breakfast table. Family and friends express concern over his condition.
A train struck an automobile at a grade crossing killing six members of the Olsen family. Henry Olsen, his wife, Halver Olsen, their children Arnold, Virginia, and Howard were injured or killed. others died at the scene. Flagman Joseph Bohatry faced a criminal negligence charge after allegedly failing to lower the crossing gates.
In Enterprise Alabama on Christmas day Wesley Carr reportedly shot 15 year old Kelsoe in the right side during a hunting trip. Carr said he believed the gun was unloaded. Kelsoe was hospitalized today with injuries described as non life threatening.
Four year old Elmer Hardigree, son of miner Daugh Hardigree near Hazard, Kentucky, was shot and killed by his uncle Pred Hardigree. The incident, described as accidental, occurred when the uncle entered the home with a gun in hand and was arrested. The family lives in Leslie County.
A locomotive and seven cars left the rails after hitting a weakened track at about 1 pm. The crash sent three sleepers down a 15 foot embankment with two on their sides. Mrs. F. J. Mackie of Los Angeles and W. H. Burbage of Winslow Ariz were the first injured passengers.

The Hill Chevrolet company on West Church Street displays six new Chevrolet models from 1926 and 1920, shown today in their attractive showroom. Cars will not be delivered before December 29, and a public invitation is extended to view the line as showroom displays continue today.

Chicago December 31. A bomb attempt targeted Joseph Clenha of Cicero. The assailants placed 12 sticks of dynamite on his porch but failed to ignite them, likely due to a passerby extinguishing the fuse. Had it exploded the Clenha residence and nearby houses could have been wrecked.
Jason NeSmith of Moul ton Route 2 is recovering at home after a stabbing incident. The report notes the injury and ongoing condition with no further details on suspects or location of the attack. Authorities have not released additional information.
