Newly elected Kiwanis officers and committee chairs met Thursday night at Why Not Care to map plans for 1949. Talks by President-elect Jimmy Williams and directors highlighted the session as members reviewed coming year activities.
Alden Ridgeway about 20 sustained three leg breaks when his Mitchell Furniture Company forward crashed into a wall during a fast play at Moulton Heights gym. He, a state employee, was taken to Decatur General hospital via Mutual Service ambulance and expected to be released this morning as the Mitchell team played Double Springs.
Washington dispatch reports a key Alabama patronage fight as Truman era appointments loom. Speculation centers on internal revenue collector for the state with Albert A Carmichael named as possible, though he denies interest. The firing of Mortimer Jordan over a government order raises questions about party and state influence. Governor James E Folsom’s bid to sway electoral votes adds to the capital debate.
A 150 member Alabama delegation will visit the 1949 Pennsylvania farm show in January seeking ideas for a southern show. Four Alabama Agricultural Center Board representatives who studied Pennsylvanias 1948 show returned in June for arena inspection. Alabama has earmarked 1.5 million dollars for an arena and livestock facilities with industry displays planned. Small delegations from other states will also attend January 10 to 14.
A pre winter cold wave drove temperatures to mid winter levels across the North central region. Readings fell to 25 below at Pembina North Dakota and -17 at Duluth Minnesota while -14 at Alexandria and -9 at Minneapolis marked the chilly spread into the Upper Midwest.
Deputy Sheriff James Barnes was bitten on the hand by a stray dog at his home while defending his own dog from an intruder. The dog fled the scene and Barnes is receiving treatment for a mangled hand and was absent from work.
Brig. Gen. Walter Hanna said Alabama football players who miss Guard drills will be discharged and turned over to draft boards. Five UA students including three football players were jailed briefly on failure to report for federal inspection, then released on bonds. Hanna criticized players for avoiding drills and warned that in a national emergency they would be called up and discharged if obligations were not met.
Four hundred employees at Alabama Hosiery Mills Inc Decatur receive a Christmas bonus and three paid holidays for 1949 as management pledges profit sharing if all work together. Lloyd L Lively notes Mojud Hosiery's sales rose from 11 2 million in 1947 to about 16 million in 1948 with new underwear division boosting gains. More than 1 million dollars of new equipment is on order.
Homer Malone, 46, was found deceased today after being struck by Beadie Sowell at her home near Athens. The coroner said Malone was hit in the left leg above the knee and bled out. Sowell claimed self defense as she responded to a break in, while authorities questioned her and noted another fatality earlier in Limestone County that week.
The Alabama Building Commission agreed to add 65 000 to the 135 000 already allocated, totaling 200 000 state participation toward a 600 000 tuberculosis sanatorium project. Construction may start spring 1949 with federal and county funds matching the state. The site is across the highway from the current facility in Morgan County.
The state building commission allotted 880000 for hospitals and other projects as a heated session saw tempers flare between Gov. James E. Folsom and critics Senator R. J. Lowe and George Quarles.
President Chiang Kai-Shek extended martial law across most of China under nationalist control. A national civic leaders’ committee releases a 91 page illustrated report condemning segregation in Washington. It cites housing, jobs, theaters, restaurants, churches, parks and playgrounds as evidence and argues that foreign observers judge the U.S. by Washington’s treatment of Black people.
Eight men died and 17 were injured in a sequence of blasts at the Kansas Power and Light main plant near Topeka. The Tecumseh tied facility suffered heavy structural damage and city utilities were disrupted as rescue crews searched debris. Authorities noted possible gas but exact cause remained undetermined.
Leon Raines a 27 year old Mobile resident was struck by a second car as he stepped from his vehicle to retrieve a large bird that flew into the windshield He was dragged 138 feet and treated at City Hospital for possible rib fractures and internal injuries The bird's fate was unknown.
The National Committee on Segregation in the Nation's Capital reports a dog cemetery has erected a color bar against burying dogs belonging to colored people. The owner, not named, claimed he expected dogs would not object but feared white customers would.

Two colored youths aged 17 and 15 are charged in Courtland with multiple burglaries. Kie Lee Greer, 17, faces burglary counts for circuit court. the 15-year-old will be tried in juvenile court. Authorities recovered $108 from Greer and $577 hidden in a hog pen. A Smith and Wesson .38 was also found. Both were arrested Thursday in Decatur with help from local police.
Two Alabama senators, Hill and Sparkman, will ask the 81st congress for about 133 million dollars to fund two waterways projects. One 16 million dam and lock on the Warrior River at Demopolis and a 117 million Tennessee Tombigbee waterway canal nine feet deep. The plan would connect Mobile and other Gulf ports with Tombigbee and upper Tennessee routes, shortening river traffic and boosting fuel savings.
Congressional investigators hear that microfilm copies of secret government papers were hidden for a decade in a Brooklyn dumb waiter shaft. Nathan Levine, nephew of Mrs. Whittaker Chambers, links the pumpkin papers to a Maryland hollowed pumpkin hideout. Chambers, a former Time editor, named suspect No. 3 in Appleton, Wisconsin. Alger Hiss is summoned by a New York grand jury amid denial of aiding espionage.
Whittaker Chambers resigns as senior editor of Time magazine after announcing his disclosures about communist espionage. The move follows Mrs. Priscilla Hiss testimony to a federal grand jury probing alleged spying. Chambers’ statement cites his revelations as the reason for resignation.
The house committee marks Hiss as suspect No 1 while suspect No 2 Henry Julian Wadleigh of Vienna Virginia testifies he has never been a communist but refuses to answer if he leaked state secrets. A telegram was sent to chemist William Ward Pigman of Appleton Wisconsin as suspect No 3. Levine, a Brooklyn lawyer, recalls Chambers seeking help amid fear of Lee.
