The market soaked up a government estimate of a record 19,748,000 bales as moderate buying and covering kept prices higher. March futures climbed from 7.86 to 7.97 with gains of 4 to 10 points amid limited offerings.
The Decatur area and the Tennessee Valley felt heavy snow and cold today. The weather bureau warns of much colder conditions for Thursday as a freeze looms after today’s snowfall. Temperatures fell 20 degrees in 24 hours, with a 30 degree minimum overnight.
Snow flurries touched Florence and Tuscaloosa with lighter precipitation southward. The U S Weather Bureau warned of mainly cold temperatures tonight and tomorrow with freezing in central regions and near the coast, then partly cloudy and colder. Minimum readings ranged from 24 to 34 across multiple cities as a wider cold wave pressed southward.

Three Alabama sisters Frances Reid Ella Izelle and Mrs a Barley pleaded guilty in U S district court to using the mails to defraud through fake marriage proposals. Judge John McDuffie was to sentence them as ten witnesses testified they provided money clothes and rings in exchange for marriage promises. A fourth sister remains confined in an Alabama insane hospital.
E H Crump, Memphis political leader, accused Governor Browning of pushing a crime bill and purging reform aims. A state parole board said it paroled Shaw in a 1932 case after Browning commuted sentence amid related controversy. Crump warned Tennessee would become a racketeering state under Browning’s program.

E. E. Forbes of Birmingham head of E. E. Forbes and Sons Piano Co. visits Decatur and says to sustain business during dull spells, more local merchants should keep pushing with advertising. He adds that nothing sells without consistent advertising and predicts fewer recessions if firms maintain effort.
In San Diego on December 8 mechanics serviced 14 large patrol planes for a non-stop flight to Coco Solo in the Panama Canal Zone as the navy's greatest long distance mass aircraft movement.
Buffalo city treasurer James D. Hoban testified that about 50 000 in snow shoveling pay may have gone to men who did not work after a blizzard. He recalled paying 127 000 to shovelers the day after the 1936 storm and said he called police after discovering errors in the payouts.
Mr. Moore of the Moore Newton Company in Cullman received a broken nose and minor injuries when his car overturned on a curve two miles from Athens on the Bee Line highway. State patrolmen said a locked left rear wheel caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle to overturn several times. After first aid he continued home last night.
Sheriff Ed Blalock and a federal agent destroyed four stills and captured one man. Three men escaped. About 25 gallons of whiskey was destroyed. The stills were made of galvanized sheeting and oil drums, with one still in operation.
Col FE Starling secret service officer to the late President Wilson and Mrs Starling visit friends in town Tuesday night then depart for Hopkinsville. They stayed at a local hotel and called on Mr and Mrs W E Crawford on Cain street. The Crawfords and Starlings are longtime friends.
Japan says no neutral zone in Nanking and urges foreigners and Chinese to flee as artillery traps the abandoned capital. Chinese reports claim 1000 plus enemy casualties at gates while bridges and villages are destroyed to deny shelter.
Washington reports a house tax sub committee abandoned proposals to tax exempt securities at federal state and municipal levels. Chairman Vinson said no recommendation would be made after a Supreme Court ruling restricting taxing gross income of federal contractors. The panel also tentatively agreed to require filers with income above 25000 to file, and to prevent non resident aliens from joint deductions.
Administration aides cheered test votes in the House and Senate as a farm and labor package gains momentum. The House defeated a cotton marketing quota change and the Senate rejected a three year limit on the program, signaling narrowing differences though final passage remains uncertain.
Five defendants appeared today on charges of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. They faced magistrates as the case moves toward further action.
Mrs. Harper Thomason of Hartselle Route 1 died last midnight at age 62. She leaves husband and twelve grandchildren among six sons, a daughter, a sister in Falkville, and a brother in Athens Route 1. funeral arrangements pending.

A small plane struck a northwest Austin residence last night killing 2 year old Leonard Albright and Capt. D A Avelino 20. Leonard’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Spencer D Albright and 3 year old Spencer Albright III were at home. Mrs Albright and a neighbor were injured but survived. Witnesses described the crash as a streak of lightning as the plane went down near the Albright home.
The Southside Baptist church holds its monthly business meeting and midweek service tonight at 7 o'clock. A 15 to 20 minute feature presents the week’s sun a see lesson prepared by Sunday school officers and teachers urged to attend. Mrs Will Spanabel leads as superintendent of teachers instruction.
Tax Collector H. R. Summer opened the courthouse tax office this morning after a lengthy shutdown since November 24. Governor Bibb Gravas appointed Eugene Graves of the Lamar Penney Agency and Miss Sarah Coleman of Massey as initial office staff to handle payments and details. Morgan County ends a period where taxes could not be paid in the United States.
In Salem Oregon State College sought 11 pianos as part of a budget request. State Treasurer Rufus C Holman quipped asking if they teach people to be farmers. Budget Director Wallace Wharton replied contented cows are needed. The pianos were approved.
The Agriculture Department projects a U S cotton harvest of 18 746 000 bales the largest on record aided by higher yields and increased planted area. Officials note a potential surplus of over 11 000 000 bales at the start of 1938 with prices subdued by the bumper crop.

Alabama reports snow and rain in north and central areas this afternoon and tonight with colder conditions inland. southern portions see rain.
