Butler of Huntsville tops the 1956 football race, while TVC sets basketball brackets for Jan 19 and tournament dates Jan 31 Feb 6 at Decatur and the track meet to be announced.
Lawrence board of Revenue Chairman C C Mc Whorter faced trial in Moulton on one of 14 embezzlement charges. A partial courtroom heard two state witnesses before noon, with more expected. Mc Whorter is accused of diverting a $35 radiator for a D 7 tractor to Hal Smith, a Lawrence contractor, via county shop foreman Roosevelt Legg.
A Tuscumbia couple Elmer Claude Baker and Mattie Fay Baker were killed when their car collided head on with a tanker truck on U.S. Highway 31 south of Cullman after failing to heed a lighted detour sign. The crash occurred about 7 45 p m and totaled their car, which caught fire. Cullman County traffic deaths this year reached 16, a record.
In New York a group of 32 church leaders led by Rev. Dr. Eugene Carson Blake appealed to President Eisenhower to free 91 Japanese war crimes prisoners still held in U.S. custody. They note other nations have released or plan to release prisoners.
The Morgan County United Fund holds its annual membership meeting Friday at 2 p m in the City Electric Department auditorium on Johnston Street. Afterward the board of directors will meet to select officers for 1957. Any donor of one dollar or more is invited to attend.
Alabama Supreme Court unanimously refused to intervene in a $100,000 contempt fine against the NAACP over refusal to surrender membership files and records in an injunction case brought by Attorney General John Patterson. A temporary injunction remains in effect as the case continues.

Clinton Tennessee battles over school integration lead to arrests as 18 people are billed by federal authorities for contempt and interference with school integration. Names include Clyde Cook and W. H. Till with ongoing bond and arraignment plans.
Diplomatic reports say European allies brushed aside Secretary Dulles idea of a NATO supercouncil to strengthen unity. A three member committee completed a report on NATO changes with no radical departures and will be reviewed at the Paris foreign ministers’ meeting early next week.
H P Still, manager of the Alabama State Employment Service Decatur office, reports steady high employment levels. In November the office placed 147 people and processed 188 openings, with 27 unfilled due to lack of qualified applicants.
London reports Queen Elizabeth II rode to Buckingham Palace chuckling over a naughty French stage farce titled Occupy Yourself With Amelia. She and a party of 20 praised the Paris company at backstage after a Palace Theatre performance then attended a supper at the French Embassy hosted by Ambassador Jean Chauvel.
The Decatur Chamber of Commerce asks local residents holding airline courtesy cards to contact the Chamber on Bank Street or call 63. A postcard with name and address or a phone call will suffice to aid efforts to obtain airline service for Decatur.
Deputy Prime Minister R A Butler told the House of Commons Eden will resume leadership immediately on return from Jamaica. He warned Eden must face the music amid Suez policy controversy as a confidence vote looms. Papers split on Eden’s future despite expected government victory.
Western officials say Soviet pressure as West Berlin traffic is searched and travelers checked signals a broad security alert across the Soviet bloc. The Kremlin fears independence movements from Hungary and Poland and demands the right to search Allied trucks and trains. Soviet guards forced a U S Army convoy to abandon its weekly run to West Germany.
In Decatur November construction permits show a downturn with 33 permits issued and total value of 181,550. For 11 months the sum reaches 3,319,366, $508,634 short of 1955 record. Residential work totals 166,050 while non residential stands at 15,500. Ten new homes range 5,000 to 30,000.
Wartime tension surged in Budapest as about 100 pro government and 100 nationalist demonstrators clashed on the grand boulevard. Russian tanks and armored cars moved through Marx Square while two Hungarians were reported killed and several wounded. Eyewitnesses noted snipers, arrests at a cafe prison, and tense crowds around Danube and Marx Square.
