Chapel Hill NC August 31 The University of North Carolina has told the NCAA it cannot comply with the so called sanity code An official who asked not to be named said the university informed NCAA of its position months ago and will issue a formal statement later.
Panama City brings a state of emergency as the Gulf storm pounded the city with near hurricane force winds of 75 mph. Beach cottages and homes suffer heavy damage estimated around 100000 dollars. no fatalities reported and cleanup begins. The remnants spread to central Alabama causing power outages and telephone disruptions as the storm moved inland from the coast.
Captiol Montgomery reports cleanup squads hauling away hundreds of fallen trees as the gulf hurricane triggers winds up to 55 miles per hour. One business and three houses sustain tree damage while Marion, Alabama, endures uprooted trees and extensive roof damage amid heavy rain.
A tropical disturbance crossed Baldwin county near Mobile with winds 45 to 55 mph and higher gusts up to 75 mph just south of Birmingham. Evacuations totaled 1,430 from Blakely Island and Bayou La Batre as power disruptions and high water affected roads and utilities along the coast.
Washington reports a senate-house conference committee aimed to finalize a broad anti inflation bill and rush it to President Truman before his national address. The plan would grant broader powers to mobilize the economy for Korea and a larger military program. Truman sought 60 million dollars to start administration of the new powers.
Sandra Kaye Whitt, two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Hubert Whitt of Steppville, is readmitted to Decatur General Hospital with tubercular meningitis. She previously stayed from Sept 30, 1949 to June 11, was discharged, and returns this afternoon. Her left side remains without use but she can sit alone. She will turn three on March 1.
Strong winds of 50 to 60 miles per hour swept Decatur and surrounding counties causing widespread tree damage and scattered barn losses. No serious injuries reported though the 75 000 acre corn crop area faces impact. Barometer readings at Decatur Electric Department hit 29 55 as TVA sub station noted the storm’s peak.
The City Council sold 156000 public improvement bonds at the lowest interest rate recorded for city financing. The bonds to Trust Company of Georgia and George M Wood and Co at two percent with a premium of 8.6 per thousand. They mature in ten years with semi annual interest on March 1 and September 1. Proceeds repay the general fund financing 15 small projects.
In Washington Aug 31 a compromise aimed at ending deadlock over a 4 billion dollar corporation excess profits tax was promised in the senate. It could clear the way for action on the 4.508 billion general tax boost bill. Senator George of Georgia said he will present a compromise without details. The proposal may postpone big profits taxes until early next year awaiting assurances from the finance committee.
A compromise bill to provide monthly allotments to dependents of servicemen was approved by the House by voice vote and sent to the Senate. It promises $85 to $165 monthly with $40 to $80 deductions from pay, totaling an estimated $300 million through next June.
One person injured and about 150 dollars in property damage reported after a collision four miles west of Moulton on Highway 24. Miss Bennie Frances Miller 22 of Moulton driver of a 1950 Chevrolet and E C Jones 32 farmer of Moulton in a tractor were involved. Lucy Blackburn a passenger sustained a cut and bruise and was treated at Irwin Dyer hospital.
Montgomery report shows only 14 polio cases in Alabama for the past week, down from 27 the previous week. The State Health Department tallies 1950 total at 184 versus 142 for the same period in 1949.
Four men were injured when 47 cars of a Rock Island freight train derailed at Teague at 4 40 AM. The engineer and an unidentified man were sent to a Houston hospital. Wheat was scattered along the tracks. This followed another collision near Lampasas earlier, injuring at least 11. The cause of the derailment was not determined.
A Transworld Airlines Constallation plane carrying 55 people including 23 Americans crashed and burned north of Cairo. All 48 passengers and seven crew members died. The flight was from Bombay to Rome, taking off from Cairo at 1:30 A M Cairo time. Notable victims included Egyptian film star Camelia Lilianne Cohen. Among the Americans were Aubrey Schofield of San Antonio and Gulf Oil and Kuwait Oil Company executive, William C. Gist’s son, and three U S Air Force personnel from Dhahran.
Korean Reds launched a major two division assault on the U S 25th in South Korea while heavy fighting raged along the Naktong front. Allied forces reopened the road north from Pohang as U S tanks and infantry moved beyond an enemy roadblock, with daily losses reported on both sides.
Two people were hospitalized after a Wednesday wreck five miles north of Athens on Highway 31. Wilson Lavern Kinzigg of Pensacola Florida and Mrs H H Lambert of Ohio sustained unspecified injuries. Two children in the back escaped unhurt. The Kinzigg 1950 Plymouth Coach struck the rear of a 1949 Dodge truck making a left turn at Piney Creek.
