Declining Craft Coppersmiths Still Flourish In New York
In Manhattan a small shop of three partner tinkers continues the ancient craft of retinning and repairing copper pots. The International Retinning and Repairing Company at 525 West 26th Street employs near retirement age workers who worry about attracting younger talent as aluminum and stainless steel dominate. Heavy copper remains chefs’ preference for even heat, though costly and requiring tin lining that wears thin. The piece also notes copper’s decorative use and suggests simple home fixes for egg whites and fruit uses. MELANIE LYNNE WATSON celebrates her first birthday with family back in Lacey's Spring.
