Dismal and Mediocre Cotton Prospects Cloud North Alabama
North Alabama cotton fields show blossoms instead of maturing bolls as the crop runs about a month late. Growers predict a dismal to mediocre yield, with Lawrence County possibly halving last year’s output. Weather since last September blamed for abnormal plant development and poor fruiting, though Belle Mina in Limestone County offers a glimmer of hope with expected yields near 60 to 70 percent of last year. State agents also flag tarnish bugs as a major factor, and some fields may not be picked at all.
