A Sunday gathering is set to be held this week with organizers noting the attendance will be the largest yet. Details on time and location were not included in the readable text.
Decatur shows a 228.1 percent population rise from 1920 to 1930, rising from 4 752 to 15 590 as census figures release the city’s advance aided by a merger with Albany. The tally places Decatur ahead of Alabama’s other large cities, with detailed gains for Anniston Bessemer Birmingham Dothan Fairfield Florence Gadsden Huntsville Mobile Montgomery Phenix City Selma Tuscaloosa.
U G White of Athens was elected president of the Alabama Merchants Association at the convention in Birmingham. The group adopted resolutions opposing a sales tax law and urged highway improvements, along with revisions to the bad check law and the federal bankruptcy act. Other officers include Cowart of Yakima as first vice president, M R Norton of Birmingham as treasurer, and W T Wells of Birmingham as secretary.
The Journal reports 42 ballot boxes from the recent Democratic primary in Jackson County have been empounded in the First National Bank vault at Scottsboro pending grand jury action into election fraud. Charges include voting for dead people and multiple votes. county races for sheriff tax collector and tax assessor are highly contested. Independent Heflin supporters held a separate primary with over 3 000 ballots cast. Winners listed: Wann sheriff Starkey over Rudder Thomas for collector Cunningham over Graham.
In Mobile Alabama the warrants allege T H Sullivan and C C Lane fired on a car injuring Mrs Thelma Wooten after a liquor dispute. Lane surrendered and admitted firing amid claims the vehicle was trying to run him down. Defense lines deny liquor and allege ambush by two men.
Eight year old Marveline Appel was attacked and killed after being held for more than a day. Bailing wire wrapped around her neck and a deep head wound were found near her home in South Bend Indiana. Police sought a man thought to have lured the girl into a car after she disappeared Wednesday.
Allen Northington, general manager of the Alabama farm bureau cotton association, announced a $5 a bale price increase for cotton delivered to the association in Auburn. The move enables eight to nine cent per pound advances on optional and seasonal pool cotton, funded by the American Cotton Co operative Association and the federal farm board, with direction for future changes. Farmers urged heavy planting of feed and grazing crops and soil enrichment through hairy vetch and Austrian peas rather than fertilizer purchases.
Decatur Kiwanians and wives held their annual outing at Mooresville. A highlight was a baseball game against the female guests, won by the women 14 to 3 amid playful complaints of umpiring bias toward the ladies. The evening featured a picnic lunch and strong praise for the event’s enjoyment.
In Marcola area near Eugene an armed posse pursued 67-year-old Ray Sutherland who allegedly shot four officers in an ambush, killing Deputy Sheriff Joe Saunders and Eugene officer Oscar Duley. Bloodhounds tracked a trail to the Sutherlands home and the elder may have been wounded in exchanges. The elder Sutherland’s son was found and arrested.
In Jacksonville Florida William Shands testified at the preliminary hearing that Tallahassee publisher Fred O Eberhardt planned to remove Dade County Sheriff Layman to seize control of gambling in Miami. The case centers on a conspiracy to assassinate Governor Doyle E Carleton.
A group of prominent farmers inspected a cotton field west of here on the Courtland pike under the Farm ers Fertilizer company and the N. V. Potash Export company. They compared sections with and without a potash top dressing and counted balls on rows to gauge differences. W H Appleton of the potash firm urged participants to run their own experiments to determine the best fertilizer for their fields.
Unemployment in Alabama is improving but some workers still seek jobs while farmers need help. Officials expect the cotton picking season to open soon, reducing idle time and offering work opportunities in the rural area.
Following the arrest of four young men in the A. Z. Bailey Wholesale Grocery robbery in Cullman, officers report no further developments. Police recovered several thousand cigarettes and boxes of cigars. All four youths are in Cullman County Jail, three arrested locally.

The Lawrence county health unit offices in Moulton Alabama will host the second eye clinic for school children and others on September 9 with Dr R E Harper leading and eye specialists and the county nurse assisting. Mary Clyde Garner helps identify children in need, with ears nose throat and teeth likely to be addressed as in the first clinic. Mrs Mattie Gilbert from the state rehabilitation service will attend and aid for several days after the school term begins in October.
Rumors say plans for an abattoir here will be consummated soon. Local officials and businessmen discuss potential site and economic impact amid steady interest.
Officers led by Chief Walter K. McAdory guard two Negro suspects held in Livingston jail after the brutal killing of Tom McKinstry, 29, a sawer, shot in the head and beaten near his lumber yard home. Mrs McKinstry heard the plea and shots but did not see the attacker. County officials expect no trouble as townspeople vow order.
A county wide welfare meeting focused on child welfare and charity is set for Friday September 5 at 11 00 a m. The gathering at Mt Spring between Moulton and Courtland includes the county child welfare board the board of education the court of county revenues teachers and other supporters from inside and outside the county. Expected out of county guests include Miss Laula Dunn of the state child welfare department and Mrs Mattie Gilbert of the state and federal rehabilitation program. Mary Clyde Garner coordinates plans and section attendance.
Frank Sterling of Danville aged 68 died after a lingering illness. Survived by wife, son John F Sterling, daughters Mrs Lucy Bolan and Mrs Delphie Cheatham, 23 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at Johnson's chapel conducted by Rev E E Byars. Interment in chapel cemetery with Gibson and Priest in charge.
State headquarters will open Monday in Birmingham to launch an intensive campaign to elect all party nominees. Local Democrats claim Morgan County party members have drifted but will be brought back into alignment.
Preparations finished for the Bethel singing school closing exercises set for Saturday at 10 o clock a.m. Singers from across the county are expected to attend the program.
