Washington Aug 23 A top administration leader said the Senate will likely add an excess profits tax to the 5 billion dollar tax bill but Senator George of Georgia disagreed. Senate debate opens tomorrow and Senator O’Mahon softened the plan proposing an 85 percent top rate to protect incentives to produce. If adopted the levy could raise eight plus billion yearly, with the finance committee’s bill backed bipartisanly and moving to the Senate floor. The package would raise about three billion in individual income taxes and one and a half billion from corporations plus other revenue from closing tax loopholes.

Sheriff Fights Off Mob At Jail
SHERIFFS AND POLICE fought off a mob of about 300 at Hawkins county jail in Rogersville Tennessee early. Two men were wounded as 15 to 20 shots were fired by officers and the crowd outside. Carl Walters held on a murder charge in a double slaying claimed he was bewitched. Walters was moved to an undisclosed East Tennessee jail. Negro Girl Shot In Shoulder Declares She Wounded Herself

Gus Handley Held on Morgan County Robbery Charge
