Mrs R E Chandler will leave Tuesday for Shreveport La to attend her son David Chandler s wedding. Moose lodge meets Tuesday at eight with attendance requested. Several residents discharged from Decatur General hospital today and others admitted. Births announced including a daughter to Mr and Mrs Adley Mason Pontiac Miah and a son to Mr and Mrs Rodney Barron Decatur. Intermediates and young people of Central Baptist church plan 7 PM prayer meetings tonight at Paula Garnett Somerville Road and Mary Caull 214 East Lafayette Street for the youth revival. A Birmingham businessman Arvel W. Dowda drowned while on a fishing trip near Wheeler dam Saturday night. Accompanied by brother in law J C Mayfield, Dowda stood up to crank the boat motor, suffered chest pain and fell overboard. Coast Guard recovered the body Sunday morning. funeral planned at Hopewell Baptist Church. Dowda survived by wife Gladys, daughter Maxie Jean, parents Mr and Mrs W W Dowda, sister Mrs J C Mayfield, and brother Billy Ronald Dowda of Hanceville.
The second tropical hurricane of the season was located south of Puerto Rico with winds around 100 miles per hour and rapidly developing. Warnings were issued for the Leeward and Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as the season's first storm wind down about 3,000 miles to the north.
The Truman administration plans a two front push this week to speed Western rearmament against Soviet threats in Europe. Secretary of State Acheson will seek $4 billion in emergency foreign arms aid before the Senate and a deputy will meet North Atlantic allies in London to urge expanded defense programs. Cooper, former Senator from Kentucky, urged all-out rearmament, accusing Moscow of directing the Korean aggression and urging stronger U S unity with Britain and France.
Washington August 21 trainmen walked out in three key terminals as President Truman ordered John R Steelman to reconvene railroads and unions to seek an agreement. The wage and hours dispute prompted five day strikes at Louisville St Paul and Cleveland affecting 250 175 and 200 workers respectively with about 1900 total idled. No seizure plans were announced and the White House said further efforts would be made this afternoon to head off a nationwide railroad strike.
War news from Korea trickled out in heavier volume after a brief period of near blackout. The U S Eighth Army removed press telephones and teletypes from advanced headquarters and told correspondents to file copies at Pusan due to reduced communications. Correspondents limited to 60 words daily for Tokyo relay and up to 2000 words on a pooled teletype basis from Taegu.
HONG KONG Aug 21 Two crack British battalions of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders and the Middlesex regiments totalling about 1500 men were ordered to join United Nations forces in Korea. Gen Sir John Harding announced in Singapore that a British infantry force would be sent immediately at General MacArthur’s request. Britain has sea and air forces already in Korea, this would be her first ground troops, and a promise of 5000 more troops was stated.
Washington Aug 21 Senator Hunt says crime investigators find evidence that big criminals control a New York bank and a Chicago cleaning and dyeing business. He cites possible reach into hotels distilleries and small steel firms while hearings approach. Kefauver confirms witnesses from New York and says racketeers profit from shortages and gray market activity. A witness list and details remain undisclosed until hearings.
Taegu, Korea Aug 20 Delayed In the Korean War the hill 303 near Waegwan became known as Atrocity Hill after Red guards killed 36 American prisoners there. The four day battle halted a Nakdong river beachhead and kept Taegu from falling as the U S First Cavalry Division held the ridge east of the Nakdong. The hill overlooks the Taegu Seoul highway and stands about 1,000 feet high two miles NW of Waegwan.
Lake Success Aug 21 delegates hold a secret session to break a procedural blockade. Soviet President Malik insists no South Korean representative joins without North Korea present, keeping the council deadlocked since Aug 1. Tomorrow’s public session may feature Austin’s long response to calls for Korean unification under UN auspices.
New England breathed relief as the season's first major hurricane passed about 120 miles off shore. Gusts reached 55 mph, with 100 mph winds near the center, and ships evacuated or moored. Coast Guard warnings helped prevent ship losses. eight marooned fishermen reported at Warren's Point, Rhode Island.
ELBA Ala Aug 21 Circuit Judge Bowen Simmons restricted testimony in the third district vote contest lawsuit to two issues whether the contest was properly filed by states rights and bond posted. The case concerns four seats on the state democratic executive committee with national party loyalists opposing the states righters in Coffee Lee and Russell counties. The investigation was halted by a temporary injunction and may go to the state supreme court or possibly the U S supreme court for final determination. The Senate advanced a home front mobilization bill granting the President power to upgrade government plants, restrict credit, allocate scarce materials, and set wage and price ceilings if needed. Amendments approved seek fair civilian distribution of materials, while loans for metal resource development could total up to two billion dollars.
American night fighters guided by flares fired from U S artillery broke a Red Korean flanking move north of Taegu. The Wolfhounds and South Korea forces halted the attack as tanks self propelled guns and trucks were knocked out by mortars and rocket fire. Capt Willard W Hawke of Seattle was among observers tracking the enemy build up.
Russell Brines reports on the Korean War frontline as North Korean casualties reach at least 11,000 and possibly 15,000 over three days while Reds press to break UN lines. Aug 22 dispatch notes Taegu gains halted, huge enemy losses, and radio claims of counterattacks amid an impending major push before Aug. 31.
Three auto accidents were reported with no injuries and slight damage. A Mutual Service car driven by Elmo Kitchens collided with a furniture truck driven by Wallace Sneed on the Moulton highway near Decatur when Sneed stopped to pick up a hitchhiker.
