Reds Test-Fire MIRVs Shift in Nuclear Arms Balance

Secretary James R. Schlesinger announced that the Soviet Union has demonstrated MIRV capability on at least two intercontinental missiles, the SSX 17 and SSX 18, signaling a narrowing of the technological gap with the United States. He warned this development could worsen prospects for a favorable U.S. Soviet agreement on multiple warheads while forecasting Russia's deployment of combat-ready MIRVs by about 1979 and a growing land-based MIRV force by the mid-1980s, with submarine-launched systems still rising to parity.

Vaccine Hope For Cytomegalic Infection Yet To Be Proved

Two British researchers at St George's Hospital report an experimental vaccine against cytomegalo virus infection shown to be safe in medical students and immunologically active. They seek a large trial funded by Britain's Medical Research Council within a year. The disease can cause fetal damage and congenital infection, with about one in 200 babies born with it. Most affected babies show no obvious illness at birth, but severe cases involve brain and liver damage. Researchers stress the need for large comparative trials to prove protective benefits.
