Alabama House keeps delay as road bond bill rumbles on
The Alabama House postponed action on the $40,000,000 road bond bill while adopting a resolution removing Rep. W S Martin from sponsors and amid a plan to raise the gasoline tax. The Senate sent to the Governor a bill allowing REA cooperatives into the telephone business if loans are available, along with a pay raise for the Alabama Public Service Commission members. A separate measure would establish a University of Alabama nursing school with no set appropriation. The House reversed field to approve an $18,000,000 substitute appropriations bill, discarding earlier higher totals, with educators agreeing to leave $1,750,000 in the general fund and no further burdens on the education trust fund. The calendar still shows other bills moving, including reapportionment measures and budget decisions.
