Changes in Food Prices This Week
Irregular and mostly minor changes in meat prices. Poultry and eggs virtually unchanged while butter edged up one or two cents per pound. Widespread wholesale price increases were tempered by heavy fruit and vegetable supplies driving many items cheaper, with lettuce and several fruits showing mixed movement. The American Institute of Food Distribution warned that continued heavy fruit shipments and lower consumer incomes may press prices lower, while a larger harvest and abundant supply push major fruit production upward. The Agriculture Department highlighted tomatoes, lettuce, snap beans, peaches, and cantaloupes as plentiful regions this week. The Dun & Bradley wholesale price index rose to 5.64 from 5.73 last week, vs 7.18 a year ago.
