Considerable cloudiness with scattered thundershowers today through Wednesday. Decatur reports a high of 84 and low of 72 with 9 inches rain for the 24 hours. Local business and social updates include visitors, illnesses, and church revival notices.
Rep Dingell to introduce an excess profits tax bill aiming at peacetime profiteering. The plan targets large corporations with under 25 000 firms taxed and offers exemptions for small firms and new corporations formed since 1940. The tax would be softer than wartime rates yet raise about 4 million dollars.
Hill Grocery of Huntsville filed an attachment for 2950.83 of 4495 found on Ralph R Cozzalino held in Madison county jail in a series of crimes including armed robbery at Monarch Food Store in Decatur. Police Chief Laura Carroll was served and has 30 days to answer garnishee proceedings. Cozzalino allegedly netted 2950.83 in the Hill robbery on February 21. He is also accused of stealing several automobiles.
The Republican policy committee met to summon all GOP senators to decide action on civil rights legislation and whether to back submitting the poll tax question to the states as a constitutional amendment. Taft indicated they may seek rule changes to limit debate but expect no quick break of southern filibusters.
A $300000 contract to equip Seattle Washington's new $4000000 city jail was awarded to Decatur Iron and Steel. Completion is estimated at about nine months. The Decatur plant will supply locking mechanisms bars beds tables and other jail furniture. The firm specializes in prison equipment and currently has 25 prison jobs under construction nationwide including jails in Gettysburg Buffalo and Mobile.
The Tennessee Valley Authority is installing two pumps and two dikes across the river from Decatur in Mooresville and White Springs backwater areas. The project aims to drain waters that could breed the mal o mosquito during summer, as reported by The Daily.
Arguments continued in Morgan circuit court as Virgil Wimberly 23 of Decatur stands trial for first degree murder in the fatal shooting of A H Norris 68 store proprietor. Wimberly testified denying signing the confession while admitting he spoke the truth and claiming he was only a store customer during the alleged robbery.
Regent Sandy Beaver of Gainesville asks the board of regents to terminate Chancellor Ray mond R. Paty after his arrest and June 16 conviction for driving while intoxicated. Beaver's letter cites university conduct rules and to be presented at the board meeting.
Mississippi Democrats reconvened in Jackson at noon and reported no protests against their solid endorsement of the states rights movement. J Knox Huff said the deadline for speakers to oppose had passed without takers while T J Tubb noted the resolutions committee backed a states rights resolution.
Otis R. Burton, Talladega tax collector and former World War I draft official, resigns from the Talladega county draft board in protest of President Truman’s order against racial segregation in the armed services. He will inform Gov. James E. Folsom he cannot accept further appointment. He cites conscience and Alabama traditions as reasons for stepping down.
Otis Lee Cardin, 34, of Helena, died in a Birmingham hospital from injuries suffered in a collision between his truck and a bulldozer at a rock quarry near Pelham yesterday. He died today.

Whistleblower Chambers testified before the House Un American Activities Committee that Alger Hiss Nath an Witt Lee Pressman and John Abt were part of an underground group led by Witt and connected to Bent ley and Ware. Additional hearings continued in the Senate on the same espionage questions.

Morgan county retail sales rose in May, up 50 percent from April, per data from the University of Alabama Bureau of Business Research. All firm types except wholesale showed gains. furniture stores jumped 42 percent while autos and hardware/farm stores fell sharply.
A petition signed by about 85 voters in Decatur West bounded by West Moulton Ninth Avenue West Second Street S and 13th Avenue West moved the area to be included in the city limits. The council asked Probate Judge T C Almon to set an election for annexation while taxi rate adjustments for Decatur Transit were discussed but deferred to an August 9 special meeting. The transit company reported a six month loss of 82004.66 after tax and expenses.
A House special committee on campaign expenditures says a false paper titled The 2nd District Congressional Gazette was prepared by a Minneapolis publicist Walter E. Quigley. The 100000 copies were mailed to Knoxville Tennessee to influence the Republican renomination bid of Rep Jennings against Hobart Atkins. The paper carried critical comments and used Atkins mailing permits. The committee will forward the information to the Justice Department as investigators stay in Tennessee for the upcoming primary.
Secretary of the Interior signed a 10 year contract with Georgia Power Co to sell power from Allatoona dam near Cartersville Georgia. The Etowah river dam is under construction by the Army engineers and power will be available early 1950. The Interior Department estimates the contract will eventually bring in about 1 million dollars annually, rates subject to Federal Power Commission approval.
Alonzo Wilds age 70 longtime superintendent of the Tuscaloosa cotton oil mill died in a jeep accident on a city street. He was alone in the vehicle when the crash occurred late yesterday.
Robert McRight, field Scout executive of the Tennessee Valley Council, will become Scout executive of the Southeast Alabama council September 1. Lilbourne Hall of Florence will take his place in the territory. Headquarters will be in Dothan as announced by M. P. Tinsley and Elmer Hawkins.
The Univis Lens plant in Dayton reopened under 1 400 National Guard troops after a weeklong CIO strike with 75 picketers. Guards used five tear gas grenades to disperse the crowd near a tavern while non-striking workers entered the plant. About 658 workers were affected as daybreak brought 100 cars of entrants through lines of guardsmen with fixed bayonets.
Esther Spiegle sues Doris Johnson for 2000 in damages alleging unlawful arrest and imprisonment on June 15 and 16 on a perjury charge. Grand jury returned a no bill on July 7. plaintiff seeks a jury trial with J N Powell as attorney.
W. E. McDaniel of Danville, already jailed in Morgan county, faces a new forgery charge today. He was arrested about ten days ago on three forgery counts and is accused of forging H. Long by O. H. McCulloch.
Three Western envoys French ambassador Yves Chataigneau, British envoy Frank Roberts, and U S diplomat Walter Bedell Smith left the Kremlin smiling after a long talk with Joseph Stalin. Molotov attended as they headed to the American embassy for a follow up meeting. Smith hinted at a possible communique that night.
Western powers and Russia reportedly agreed on secrecy over Berlin and other cold war issues. American British and French envoys met Soviet Premier Stalin at the Kremlin for over two hours. State Department officer Michael McDermott said no comment would be issued on the conference contents. Reports of the talks circulated in London Paris and Moscow with no official confirmation.
Western powers held quiet talks with Moscow amid cautious optimism for cooperation with Russia on general issues. Berlin remained tense with Russian propaganda, police clashes, and a persistent airlift. The U S Air Force delivered 40 411 tons of food last month while coal moved slowly.
