City council meets tonight at 7 to discuss curb and gutter work on the 1200 block of Somerville Road SE. Paul Krebs from Polglaze and Basenberg, Birmingham, will report on proposed Southeast Decatur sanitary sewers.
A Post Office Committee disclosed dismissals and suspensions of ten workers for misuse of sick leave plus four suspensions. The GAO report cited widespread abuse costing the government millions annually in substitute pay. Dismissals were effective about two weeks ago. Some disciplined employees were seen at race tracks on days they claimed illness.
A 1952 Nash Ford driven by Robert Earl Jackson collided at the 5th Ave SW and 2nd St intersection at 11 18 a.m. injuring Delores Kinney and her son Peter Kinney. They were taken to Decatur General Hospital for treatment and observation. Police reported heavy damage to the right side of the car and the Ford.
President Eisenhower said the announcement that 11 American airmen held by Communist China since 1953 will be released is a cause for nationwide relief and joy. White House confirmed the decision following an early morning broadcast and British attache reports.

About 100 lawmakers from the Senate and House urged President Eisenhower to take up at Cabinet level a positive new cotton program. George of Georgia led 35 senators and 60 plus representatives. A companion bill by Senators Eastman and Thurmond seeks to boost export sales of surplus cotton and limit imports to 50 percent above the two year import average.
Damon McKay a 27 year old Sarasota city employee and father of three was found dead wedged under an automobile on a highway near Florala Alabama Saturday night. State toxicologist said he was struck by at least two cars but the exact one that killed him was not determined. He had traveled with Edney Baxley of Bradenton to visit relatives in Chancellor Geneva County before returning to Florala where the fatality occurred.
An 11 year old girl from Somerville 2 named Jimmie Johnson brought a claim check for a 425 prize but failed to fill in two blanks. She had correct answers on the entries she completed. Officials will announce the jackpot status at five this afternoon.
New York Army sergeant James C. Gallagher 24 of Brooklyn faces a general court martial on charges of aiding the enemy and murdering three American prisoners at North Korean POW Camp No. 5. Prosecutors call the deaths unpremeditated murders as Gallagher allegedly forcibly ejected three sick prisoners.
Graveside services are set for Mary Rachel Sherrill two months old at City Cemetery. Mary Rachel died Saturday at 7 am at her home 906 17th Ave SE from suffocation when her head became caught between the mattress and bed end. Parents Billy Joe and Mary Sherrill survive with one brother William Dale and grandparents Mrs Norman Dunn Edward Warrick and I W Sherrill. Brown Funeral Home to direct interment.
In Roseburg Oregon a seven minute win by a much maligned night train against the Pony Express anchor man sparked regional excitement. About 75 riders including seven women dressed in Western garb rode the route from Eugene to Roseburg over the branch line to spotlight rail service and honor the old mail run.
Congress adjournment plans were tangled by disputes over public housing and pay raises for its own staff. Leaders set tonight as the new target to quit though the July 31 deadline remains. House and Senate sessions stretched late with few adjournment prospects.
A Sunday morning one car crash near Tanner Cross-Roads on Huntsville Browns Ferry Road left Christine Kingston 20 Athens. Frank Johnson 7 Athens. and Ananiah Sandful 31 Athens with injuries. Sandful said steering failed in his 1951 GMC pickup. They were treated for shock and broken ribs and taken to Athens Limestone Hospital.
Red China announced the immediate release of 11 U S airmen held for spying after about 32 months in prison. They were shot down during the Korean War and are expected to reach Hong Kong to be turned over to the United States. The names and sentences of the 11 are listed.
Vandalism across Holly Street fractures several window panes at Landers Welding Shop and Britnell's Garage Saturday night. A car and a Meadow Gold Milk truck parked on Holly Street also suffer damage. Lt. Pack Self notes similar incidents have occurred previously.
