Identifying and teaching LDs discussed by association

Joann Howard a learning disability instructor for Danville Public Schools spoke at the International Reading Association meeting about recognizing LD traits and teaching methods. She outlined three trouble levels input processing and output with examples and urged flexible instructional approaches including auditory visual and tactile kinesthetic methods.

Obituary Notices From The Danville Register

Edith Williamson Miles of 811 Main St died Thursday night in Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was educated at Randolph Macon Institute and Mary Baldwin College and belonged to several local groups. Survived by one brother and four half-brothers, funeral arrangements pending at Townes Funeral Home. Also noted: Ernest William Rowland Jr died at 44 of an apparent heart attack at 207 Northmont Blvd with services planned and burial at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Funeral for Guy H. McCune in Danville

The funeral for Guy Harold McCune, 63, of 1303 Claiborne Street, will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Delton Agner officiating. Interment is in Highland Burial Park. He died Wednesday at The Memorial Hospital of Danville after two weeks of illness. He was a Dan River Inc. employee before retirement and a Baptist. He is survived by a daughter Carolyn Marie Davis and two grandchildren, plus siblings and a wide extended family.

SWCD To Hold Awards Night

The Pittsylvania County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its annual Awards Night Thursday Nov. 3 at 6 30 p m at the Charcoal House. Jim Gallman of Stauffer Chemical Company will present the program, noted W P Johnson SWCD chairman.

Commission To Conduct Va. Survey

The Virginia Commission for Children and Youth is visiting 3 000 households statewide to profile families with children under 22. The survey samples 10 localities in each of 22 planning regions, with 0 volunteers collecting data using a VCCY questionnaire. Responses are kept confidential with no names recorded.

Virginia Business Improves In September In Virginia Report

The Virginia Business Report from the College of William and Mary notes broad gains in September across bank debits construction electricity usage and non agricultural employment with Danville retail sales up 5.7 percent and August gains in national and state indicators. Staunton and Lynchburg show sharp statewide increases with nine month growth at 24 percent.

WPPDC Clears Research Program in Pittsylvania and Danville

The West Piedmont Planning District Commission approved a four year grant of 910178 for a mental health and drug abuse research program to run in 11 Pittsylvania County and Danville City schools using values clarification to boost self concept and decision making. A separate 64000 federal HEW funded Headstart program for Pittsylvania County begins with 50 children, 10 handicapped, with 4000 for handicapped services.

Coleman Charged In Bradner Death

A 48-year-old Dry Fork man, Charlie Coleman, was arrested on a murder charge in the stabbing death of his half-brother Jerry Bland Bradner, 39, at their mother's Dry Fork residence Tuesday evening. Bradner died after a kitchen dispute over eggs, with an autopsy pending. Coleman is in Danville City Jail awaiting further proceedings.

Robb endorses community education in Virginia swing

Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Chuck Robb told a Chatham audience that isolating schools harms public education and urged a year round approach. He described community education as bringing local activities from recreation to civic clubs into schools, day and night.

Howell May Harm Highway Program

Gov Mills Godwin warned that Henry Howell's election could threaten Virginia's highway program. He spoke at the Highway and Transportation Conference without naming Howell directly, but implied proposed shifts of state police costs to the highway fund could slow road progress and influence the State Highway and Transportation Commission.
