Dan River Retired Club trips to Blue Ridge and Ferrum Festival

Dan River Retired Club members rode two buses to the Blue Ridge Parkway with stops at Lovers Leap Mabrys Mill and Handy's orchard then James Sowers fruit stand. The group plans a Ferrum Folk Life Festival trip on Oct 29. A week of senior center activities includes baking classes, square dancing, crafts, a city tour, Bible study, and social events.

Goodyear Reports Record Sales and Income for Nine Months

The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co reported a nine month sales of 4.92 billion and net income of 163.6 million, both records, with per share earnings of 2.26 and 3.3 cents per sales dollar. Third quarter sales reached 1.62 billion, with net income of 33.9 million, up from a loss a year earlier. Chairman Pilliod forecast 1977 record sales and earnings near the all‑time high.

Johnnie Bullins of Bassett aged 59 died Wednesday at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville. He worked for Henry County Plywood Corp. in Ridgeway. The funeral for Mrs Bertha Jeffress Ramey will be held Friday at 2 30 p m from Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with burial at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. Mrs Ramey, 87, died Tuesday afternoon in Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
