Output Continues from Page One Productivity Trends in a Recession
Productivity typically drops at the start of a recession as employers hesitate to lay off workers but improves later as they maximize output from existing staff. The latest government data show April employment rising while the jobless rate also increased. In nonfinancial corporations, the productivity advance stemmed from hours worked falling faster than output, with hours down 17.1 percent and output down 14.3 percent. In manufacturing, the initial 7.2 percent drop was revised to 8 percent. The Labor Department noted strikes and stoppages rose to 1.5 work days per 1,000, up from 1.1 in March and 2.1 the prior year. New unemployment claims for the week ending May 17 totaled 440 9 percent, the lowest since November 2. The text also mentions a test program and its nationwide extension schedule across states and months and notes that direct deposit may take up to two months after a form is filed.
