City Managers Differ On Governor Godwin Sales Tax Plan
City Manager T Edward Temple voiced concern over a 1 percent local cap in Gov Godwin's state sales tax bill and urged local flexibility. Mayor McCubbins backed a 3 percent state tax with 2 percent returned, while Pittsylvania leaders weighed revenue gains against higher local taxes and needs such as a new jail. The plan would earmark 1 percent to locals based on school age population, with a possible additional local levy.
