Bill To Ban Abortions Is Vetoed
Gov. Milton J. Shapp vetoed a bill that would ban all abortions except to save the mother's life. He said it threatens women's rights, ignores rape and incest exceptions and health risk provisions, and disregards an abortion reform commission's recommendations. An override was expected as the 1971-72 session closed. The state’s abortion law had been ruled unconstitutional by two county courts and awaited the Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision.
