Nine persons died and 32 were injured in a blaze at a newly built elderly home in Atlanta. Fire officials said many victims died from smoke inhalation as rescuers navigated a pitch-black hallway. One body was found in an elevator on the seventh floor. Fire conditions reached extreme heat, aiding elevator jamming.
Residents of the 11 story Baptist Towers, a 4.5 million building nearing completion, were roused by a buzzing alarm at 2:19 a.m. Pauline Hersey on the eighth floor described pulling the alarm and watching smoke billow under the door. She dampened a towel to block a crevice, opened a window, and saw the blaze in a nearby wing as both stairwells and elevator shafts filled with smoke.
The United States told the Communist side at peace talks in Paris that it intends no delay in ending the war and moving to peace and reconstruction. North Vietnam rejected South Vietnam's demand for North troop withdrawal as a condition for cease fire. Porter urged reporters not to read too much pessimism into current exchanges while Kissinger and Tho prepare new secret talks. The Hanoi position insists U.S. and foreign troops must depart. South Vietnam stresses the 300,000 North Vietnamese troops in the South as key to real cease-fire. Porter reiterated caution about commenting on private talks and urged faith in progress toward a mutually satisfactory settlement.
President Nixon held a second surprise meeting with South Vietnamese envoy Nguyen Phu Duc as signs rose that a final allied position on peace talks near. Negotiations resume in Paris with Kissinger after Vietnamization continues, while Poland agrees to join a four nation cease fire commission.
William P. Rogers will stay as Secretary of State under Nixon's second term while a reshaped top staff arrives. Ronald L.
