The creator of the L'il Abner comic strip collapsed while visiting Harrison for a lecture tour after stopping to see his son. He was admitted to Boone County Hospital Monday after being found resting comfortably. The incident occurred Sunday as he traveled through the area.
Fog halted a Civil Air Patrol search for William Crawford missing since Friday after he took off Thursday from a Hopland private field in a Cessna 210. Crawford, 35, is the son of Mr and Mrs Frank Crawford, and last communicated with Oakland Airport Friday morning for weather updates while flying between Santa Rosa and Ukiah.
James Devine Steed 35 of Marysville Wash and Floyd Hintz 24 of Seattle were sentenced by U S District Judge Gordon Thompson Jr to 15 years in prison and 10 000 fine for smuggling 100 pounds of marijuana from Mexico aboard a bullet ridden United Air Lines plane. The crash landing followed a Reno Nev chase after a refueling stop where police fired and the wreck was found in a field at Beaver Marsh Ore with 17 bullet holes. The marijuana valued at about 250000 was to be sold on the legal market.
In rural Tuscaloosa County a wood frame house fire killed seven people. Deputy Don Lake said the occupants were likely asphyxiated before the flames consumed the building. Victims include Ernest Henderson 4 and his wife Bertha 46 their children Jimmy 2 Shirky 9 months and three foster children Allia Fay Coleman 12 Sharon Coleman 10 Flora Ann Coleman 9. Jack Coleman Jr 10 was rescued from the blaze.
Superior Court Judge Raymond Choate denied the motion to dismiss the indictment charging Charles Manson and three family members in the killings of ranch hand Donald Shorty Shea and Gary Hinman. Choate ruled there was sufficient evidence for the indictments and planned to decide today on a defense bid to move the trial to a distant venue to avoid publicity harming a fair trial.
Four year old Daniel Richard Jones, awaiting heart surgery, toured the Western White House with President Nixon. Police arranged the visit after Daniel asked to meet policemen and ride in a patrol car for his birthday. Daniel, with two prior operations and a slim 20 percent survival likelihood, will undergo another operation soon in Los Angeles.
Robert Shouse and his wife Beatriz, both from Vallejo, rode a 1-foot rubber life raft toward Hawaii but faced keel trouble and rough seas. Their craft washed onto a Monterey County beach on Monday after departing near Santa Cruz Saturday. Both occupants were uninjured and Shouse planned another try in two months, though his wife may not join.
The Smell Business Administra tion approved more than 34 million in federal loans for February 9 quake victims. A spokesman said 1,889 loans of over 9,400 had been paid, with 1,228 loans approved by April 30. About 150 new applications arrive daily and process in about 10 days.
Bernard Falk of BBC TV started a four year jail sentence after he declined to reveal the identity of an alleged Irish Republican Army figure he interviewed. Falk, 28, cited personal ethics as a reason for not disclosing the interview subject.

Testimony cited cases at West Garden High Ponca City and Cherokee County schools, and a family moving from San Antonio to Corpus Christi over prior debt. The Agriculture Department said 7.8 million eligible for free or reduced lunches, but only 5.9 million were fed.
