A failed arson attempt occurred when a would be firebomber threw a Molotov cocktail at a Chico Air Force recruiting office. Police said the gasoline did not ignite and the assailant repeatedly tried to ignite the fuel by tossing matches and cigarettes, but the device did not take.
American Airlines pilot Cal vin Springer, sole occupant of a four place light aircraft, died when his plane crashed on Bear Mountain about 10 miles southwest of San Andreas en route to San Francisco. Cause unknown. Springer left San Andreas airport Tuesday morning in light rain and was overdue by two hours before a search plane located the wreck.
Four transformers exploded at a small Edison substation early today, sparking a hour long blackout across 12 square miles in Industry La Puente Valinda and West Covina. Investigators ruled out an explosive device, noting the first blast at 3 44 am and a fifth explosion 45 minutes later. Edison crews restored service within an hour, finding a fried cat at the base of a shattered transformer as a possible cause.
District Court Judge George Boldt postponed a hearing to decide if 19 year old Leslie Bacon should be compelled to answer questions about a bank plot or exercise her Fifth Amendment rights. The jury will reconvene Thursday, pending the judge's ruling. secret sessions with Bacon cannot resume until then.

Edmond’s roommates claimed no knowledge of the marijuana as Edmond was at a Reserve unit drill, and San Francisco officers joined the investigation.
