Budget action clears Brown plan cost on education aid

Sacramento AP The Assembly Ways and Means Committee approved about $414.75 million for 1964-85 requests and shifted funds to UC, state employment, and various colleges and services. The party balance gives Democrats a 50-28 edge, with two vacancies, risking a floor fight before the March 29 budget adjournment deadline. The panel also endorsed increases in higher education spending and police staffing to meet deficit needs.

Telephone Rate Hike Bid Sliced

SAN FRANCISCO AP Pacific Telephone cuts back its proposed rate increase from 43 953 000 to 9 5 million due to savings from a federal tax cut. The filing with the State Public Utilities Commission says higher costs from labor talks and other factors justify the rise. A company spokesman notes earnings have been among the lowest of Belt System firms. The revised proposal would raise monthly residential bills by five cents in San Francisco Los Angeles and San Diego.

Cuban Exiles Renew Pledge to Fight in Cuba by May

In Miami the Cuban Revolutionary Junta renewed its vow that members will be fighting Communist forces inside Cuba by May 20. Rogelio Cisneros, JURE Miami head, announced a Cuban exile meeting on that date, Cuban independence day, to honor Venezuelan President Roly Betancourt, an outspoken foe of Fidel Castro.
